Today's guest was referred to me by a friend of mine who recently began reading a book series called Untwisting Scriptures. My friend came out of the same cult I was involved in and was telling me about how much these books were helping her. She asked me if I knew about the author and I said no.

So! I did some research. I found Rebecca Davis online and loved her ministry and mission so much I reached out inviting her to speak on the podcast. Thankfully, she said yes!

Rebecca has written five books in the Untwisting Scriptures series and is working on the 6th. She began writing these books after years of realizing how often scripture is taken out of context and used to abuse others.

Today's conversation was inspired by an article I read on Medium.com, from someone whom I have grown close to. She wrote an article about leaving a church and why. And many people responded! The article created a lot of conversation that led to me writing an article as well!

Through these conversations, the topic of how important it is to be different came up. Sadly, many cultish environments package mind control, brainwashing, or legalism as "unity."

Today, we are going to discuss the importance of diversity and how to find a healthy community.

Recently, I read a powerful book about abuse in the church that was so impactful, I have to share it! I also happened to be reading this book at the perfect time when I went through a personal experience that this book directly speaks to.

In the last 15 years, I have come across many different deliverance ministries. Some of them are doing it well, but sadly most of them are not. I have done a lot of research and spoken with dozens of people who have their own deliverance testimonies. And sadly, I have discovered that more testimonies than not are more about being traumatized than free.

So, I have had to ask the question, "Why is that?"

A big reason why is that so many deliverance facilitators are not trauma informed and not applying deliverance as God intended it to be applied. So let's talk about that!

How can we be more trauma informed? Why does that matter? What are signs for an unhealthy deliverance ministry? What is Biblical and what isn't?

In the last decade, I have had too many conversations with people who were damaged or confused by the purity culture movement in the church. Too many people have come forward with sexual abuse stories despite such conservative or extreme purity teachings in the church.

I found today's guest by accident. As I was researching, I came upon a Ted Talk by Ashley Easter, founder of Courage365. As I listened, I thought, "I have to know more about this person!"

So, I researched Ashley and found her website, Courage365. I quickly discovered that Ashley is a survivor of a cult who now uses her non-profit to provide a safe community, free resources, and more for anyone who has experienced religious abuse.
