  • Why Shazam should to be more popular than Superman

In this #moviereview we check out #Shazam! the latest film from #DCcomics.

It is the story of 14 year-old foster kid, Billy Batson, who’s been running away from various foster homes in search of his mother who abandoned him when he was a toddler. When moving in with his newest foster family Billy meets Freddy, a kid who can’t walk with out the aid of a crutch, tomented by bullies at school and obsessed with superheroes. Billy also meets Shazam an ageing wizard who has been using his powers to hold back an evil force and is seeking a champion to pass the torch to. Billy shouts his name, and Shazam he’s a 14 year-old kid in and adult super hero’s body.

Why Shazam? Well it appears that the ancient wizard must be some kind of public servant because Shazam is an acronym for six ancient heroes, The wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achillies and speed of Mercury.

Billy has to come to terms with the responsibility bestowed upon him, finding his place in his new foster family and preventing the evil Doctor Thaddeus Sivana from using that evil force mentioned before to take his power. It’s a pretty standard super hero origin film—discover power, learn lesson about the whole responsibility thing, fight bad guy in a big battle at the end—but the point of difference is quite obviously a kid trapped in the adult hero’s body.

  • Jordan Peele's "Us" - find out why the critics got 5 on it!

People say Jordan Peele is a modern day Alfred Hitchcock, but I look at him more like the Chuck D and Public Enemy of horror. Check out the #moviereview for #US!

On the surface, as the trailers lead us to believe, Us is about a family terrorised by a family of doppelgangers who will stop at nothing to erase them and take over their lives. Scary stuff. But director Jordan Peele has also hinted that Us is about America, and it’s right there in the title Us “U.S.”, as in United States. It’s about the fear of the others, those who might invade their lives and take everything that they’ve worked for. The boogeyman, the foreign invader, Peele suggests that it’s us. We will be the ones to tear ourselves apart. Take a look around, it’s a bold and incredibly profound statement reflective of the times we live in weaved into a horror movie.

  • The Dirt Reviewed

    Check out the latest #MovieReview of #Netflix's #MotleyCrue #biopic.

Mötley Crüe were a band formed in a time where mythology was everything. There was no social media, you weren’t constantly updated as to what they were eating for breakfast or wether they’d just taken a dump. Instead here in Australia you had to wait for the first Wednesday of every month when Hot Metal came out. You’d race to the newsagents with your pocket money to pick up your copy and find out what antics your heavy metal heroes got up to that month.

Not being spoiled by a constant flow of information meant imaginations could run wild. It turned musicians into gods.

I think that their biography, The Dirt, is maybe one of the most entertaining rock biographies I’ve ever read.

If you haven’t had the pleasure, author Neil Strauss has pieced it together with all members of the band telling it from their own perspective. It’s full of he said, she said storytelling. There is no doubt that the truth probably sits somewhere in between but they spent the best part of their time on tour so messed up and out of their heads I’m surprised they remember anything, let alone anything correctly.

Turning that book into a biopic is not only ambitious but seemingly impossible. Yet here we are.

  • Captain Marvel reviewed - calm your tits!

It’s a bit of a shame we can’t talk about captain Marvel without talking about all the rubbish that’s played out in the lead up to it’s release. Rubbish I was blissfully unaware of until I put it on the content schedule and started to do research for this movie review. Let's take a look at the controversy in the lead up to Captain Marvel's release and then get around to reviewing the film shall we?

  • Lords of Chaos - the devil is in the detail

One of my favourite music biographies that actually read more like a true crime novel is Lords of Chaos by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind. I burned through my first reading of it like a Norwegian church on the 6th of the 6th at 6am, I could not put it down.

The stories of murder, suicide, arson and Mayhem contained within its pages have helped to cement the legend of Norwegian Black Metal as being one of the most dangerous and extreme forms of music ever created. Even though those closest to the subject matter have openly claimed the book was a load of crap.

What a great idea for a movie!

When they said they were making a film based on the book I was intrigued. Were they going to further dilute this story and dispel the legends, or would they push this genre closer to the fashion statement that a lot of it seems to be these days?

We’ve been seeing trailers for Alita: battle Angel in cinemas for about a year now and when the hype train is long it is matched by the conga line of critics ready and willing to poop on it at release. Check out the movie reviews to find out what it's all about.

  • Cold Pursuit - Liam Neeson, racism and how to bomb an opening

Is Liam Neeson a racist and is #ColdPursuit an utterly pointless remake? Sit down, I think we need to have a little talk. Please consider this #moviereview and #commentary on the events leading up to the controversial premiere for a movie that has been done before.

  • Glass - a bad tempered movie review

M Night Shyamalan was back on a roll following the success of Split but in spite of all hype behind his latest film Glass it seems he’s had to close down the ride rather abruptly. That’s not to say that that #Glass is an entirely terrible movie but our buddy M Night has made some really weird choices with the story. Check out the #MovieReview of #GlassMovie to find out what I mean.

  • Bandersnatch and the frustration with freedom of choice

The concept of Netflix’s latest Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch was compelling to say the least, but it’s execution was a little problematic.

This special choose your own adventure event continued the usual themes that run through all Black Mirror episodes. The huge point of difference though was that the ending was determined by the choices you made throughout the movie.

  • Netflix’s You, the terror is in the tweets

A lot of critics have pegged #Netflix's You as a psychological thriller but there seems to be a little more to it. This is thanks to some complex characters and a layered plot that ducks and weaves through 10 compelling episodes. Well maybe 8 compelling episodes and two they could have perhaps condensed into one.
