For the first time in seventeen episodes, Rhys and Sam are finally able to record the podcast in person!
Thanks to lockdown easing, Rhys and Charlotte kindly invited me to stay at their house for a few days, which allowed us to record this episode in their lounge (we only used one microphone, so it may be quieter than normal). As prompted by Rhys' news article, we discuss how we would have spent $2500 of our parents' money if we had the opportunity as young children. The discussion moves on to how we read Acts when we were younger compared to nowadays, with special reference to the role of the Holy Spirit.
In 'Grab-a-Cuppa', I recommend taking a break from social media (as a form of fasting) and Rhys recommends one of his favourite board games:

Ouch.
We have reached the New Testament in our discussion of the biblical 'genres' (using the term loosely): this week we look at the Gospels; or, as we share, the Gospel (singular) according to four different perspectives. Like the nerds that we are, we ensure to laugh about our favourite features of St. John's account. I begin the episode by sharing some news that isn't new, before Rhys shows off his new phone (which can "finally play games").

In this episode, we look at the group of books that conclude the Old Testament, namely, the so-called 'minor prophets'. We discuss our thoughts about this title and we agree that it seems somewhat unfair to call them 'minor': although this term would really have referred to their shorter length rather than their significance, in our experience, the 'minor prophets' do tend to get neglected. In particular, we briefly consider Jonah, Hosea, Obadiah, and Zechariah (the passages I was thinking of are Zech. 9:9; 11:13; 12:10; 13:7). I begin the episode by sharing the effects my degree has had on my speech, before Rhys shares a news story about a collection of Joshes (that word does not look right...?).

Listen to this episode to enjoy half an hour of conversation that is characterised, in part, by unusual combinations (just in case Rhys and I aren't unusual enough for you): Rhys asks me for my opinion on some strange food ideas and I recommend an amateur experimental/alt-rock band that will soon be releasing their first album. Otherwise, we get stuck into the matter of our understanding of the 'prophetic' genre in the Bible, starting with a group of five books within the Old Testament called 'the major prophets' (we weren't sure if it was four or five, but, by the power invested in me by Google, I can confirm that Daniel is considered a major prophet).

Perhaps we're comfortable in our masculinity (I can already hear Rhys' Mum laughing at the prospect), or perhaps we don't even know what the word means (if so, we'll just have to explore it in an episode!)...either way, Rhys and I (Sam) start off this episode with a quasi-romantic sort of exchange; the type that you find in a 'bromance'. Whatever you may think, I can assure you that Rhys is married to Charlotte, not me.
The theme of this episode is the 'Wisdom' genre of the Old Testament, which includes Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon/Songs. During our discussion, we talk about the fact that we found Psalms and Proverbs to be among the most accessible and emotional books of the whole Bible, as well as our growing appreciation of the variety and the practical applicability of the content. Naturally, we agree that we avoided Song of Solomon when we younger, on the basis of it being 'naughty'.
We also respond to a picture - sent in by a listener! (see our Facebook page) - of a forgotten memory that we associated with church youth groups. In 'Grab a Cuppa', Rhys recommends getting green fingers and I present a double dose in the form of the brilliant comedian, Tim Hawkins, and Christopher Nolan's new film, Tenet.

We have passed 500 downloads! Thank you to all our listeners!
For this episode, Rhys and I wondered which guest we could invite onto the podcast who would not be phased by our rambling style of conversation and wacky humour - we both thought of the same person. So, in this episode, we are joined by our old friend and mentor, Tim Funnell, who is the Team Leader for LiNX Christian Youth Trust in Torbay, South Devon.
The discussion involves how we deal with history that may not be 100% historically accurate, the importance of perspective, as well as what we should call those party-chameleon-tongue-things.

We're starting a new series! Maybe we can justify calling this one a 'series' because it will last more than three episodes...
After looking at the Gospel, the Trinity, and the theological virtues, we're now discussing how our understanding of the Bible has developed. Instead of just looking at Old and New Testaments, or trying to summarise every single book within the Bible, we've decided to look at genres (i.e. types of literature). The first of these is the Law, otherwise known as the Pentateuch, the Torah, or the first five books of the Bible.
Rhys begins the episode with a strange news story about a manikin called Alan before sharing his understanding of the Law as ceremonial, social, and moral. During the conversation, Sam shares one of his favourite verses, as well as some wisdom from NT Wright, William Barclay, and the late Michael Green.

"I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words", that...
"I wanna know what love is":
"Wouldn't it be nice" if it was...
"More than a feeling"?
Man, I must be a poet 'cause I'm coming up with some great material today. I better make sure to copyright this stuff before anyone steals it...
Welcome to the last episode in our three-part series on the theological virtues. The conversation revolves around love and how it looks in our memories of the playground, in popular media, and in the Church. We realise that people usually have to qualify the phrase "I love you" with "as a brother" or "as a friend" if they don't want to imply a romantic form of love. Yet love is so much more than romance (and that's including the marriage scenario)! In 'Grab a Cuppa', Rhys recommends WandaVision, and I recommend Supertramp's, Breakfast in America.
Exciting news! As we mark this milestone of our tenth episode, we decided to try recording video! (This is when all of our two listeners go, "ooooOOOOoooh") It was very much a baby step but Rhys has done a superb job with the editing. Check it out on our Facebook page.
Lots of love,
The Weak Squash and Broken Biscuits Podcast
In the second episode of their current series, Sam and Rhys discuss Christian hope - it becomes clear that there is a world of difference between a biblical definition of hope and its everyday usage (e.g. "I hope to see you soon!"). Along the way, the conversation includes the difficulties of both declaring and living out Christian hope, some intense memories of playing video games, Risk, and Monopoly, and new recommendations in our new section, 'Grab a Cuppa' (or "grubucuppah").
We hope you benefit from it! (*snort*)

Apologies for the late release - we had to re-record the last section because I (Sam) lost part of the file.
In the first of their new series on the 'theological virtues' (i.e. a fancy way of referring to faith, hope, and love), Rhys and Sam reflect on faith. Interestingly, neither of them noticed significant changes in their understanding of the faith as a concept; rather, they have come to appreciate how an active faith is manifest in the humble day-to-day.
The conversation along the way involves Sam's first sermons and Rhys' gorgeous new puppy ("Paddy" - check out the Facebook page for photos). Sam also has a musical confession in 'Grab a Cuppa'.
Enjoy!
