Before the AMC Anne Rice Immortal Universe, Anne Rice's vampire novels, particularly The Vampire Chronicles, found their initial cross-media representation in comic books during the early 1990s. Innovation Comics adapted The Vampire Lestat, Interview with the Vampire, and The Queen of the Damned, with faithful adaptations and covers by John Bolton, becoming instant hits. However, Innovation Comics eventually succumbed to the 1994 comic book industry crash, leaving many adaptations unfinished and out of print[1]. Other publishers like Millennium Comics and Sicilian Dragon also attempted adaptations of Rice's other works, such as The Witching Hour and The Tale of the Body Thief, but these were largely incomplete due to various issues[1]. In 2013, Yen Press released Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story, a manga-style retelling of the first novel from Claudia's perspective, which Anne Rice herself praised[1]. The article suggests that with the current AMC series, it is unlikely new comic adaptations will emerge, but hopes for the re-release of the original comic book gems for new audiences[1].
