Across different cultures around the world, the autumn equinox is marked with various customs, beliefs and festivals to symbolize the transition from the warmth of summer to the cool embrace of autumn.

Mabon is one such festival, that celebrates the second harvest and the transition of the Earth into the season of autumn. It takes place around September 21st or 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere, and around March 21st or 22nd in the Southern Hemisphere. This festival has its roots in ancient Celtic and Pagan traditions, and it is often associated with a variety of folklore and mythical tales.

On today's creepy episode, we share tales of Old Hag and other Sleep Demons. We have an introduction piece, followed by two, true scary stories!

In folklore, the night hag is often depicted as a supernatural being or an evil spirit that visits people during their sleep.

Legend states that the night hag sits on the chest of the sleeping victim, causing feelings of pressure or suffocation, commonly known as sleep paralysis. Some tales describe her as an old, witch-like woman, while others portray her as a shadowy figure or even a demonic entity.

The night hag is believed to bring nightmares and bad dreams, sometimes even feeding off the fear and negative energy of those she torments. It is said that she can manipulate dreams and create terrifying illusions, making her presence all the more unsettling.

In the depths of folklore and urban legends, there exists a peculiar creature known as the Not Deer. From afar, it may resemble an ordinary deer, but upon closer inspection, something seems amiss.

The Not Deer's appearance is deceptive, mimicking that of a deer from a distance. However, as one approaches or observes it for longer, peculiar details become apparent. Its movements are often likened to those of a newborn deer, despite its adult-sized body. Witnesses have reported an uncanny agility and grace that deviates from a typical deer's behavior.

Not Deers possess limbs that are noticeably longer than those of a regular deer, with some accounts suggesting the presence of additional joints. The creature's chest is often described as having a barrel-like shape, further setting it apart from its deer counterparts. These unique physical attributes contribute to the sense of otherworldliness that surrounds the Not Deer.

This story occurred in the summer of 2008. I grew up in Oregon and was acquainted with the outdoors at an early age. My favorite hobby came to be hiking, particularly in areas that are either very dangerous or isolated. The health benefits of hiking were secondary to the thrills of walking the edges of exposed cliffs, being in cougar and bear territory, and knowing that I was far from help. *Into the Wild* was released in the fall of 2007 and I immediately fell in love. Being a high school senior, I felt imprisoned in my parent's house. A teenager with wild eyes, the movie spoke to my sense of adventure. It inspired me to hike the California portion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) upon graduation.

For the uninitiated, the PCT is a 2,700 north-south trail from the border of Mexico to that of Canada. It traverses deserts, forests, and mountains. It ranges from sea level to 13,000 feet elevation. The reason I tell you this is because needless to say, some parts of the trail are more remote than anything you can imagine. You aren't hiking outside of LA and San Francisco here. You're hiking through hundreds of miles of untamed wilderness in what is essentially the Wild West.

Nestled majestically in Northern California, Mount Shasta is not only a magnificent natural wonder but also a place steeped in mystery and mythology.

According to Native American tribes, Mount Shasta is considered a sacred and spiritual site. The Wintu people believe that the mountain is inhabited by powerful spirits and is the center of creation. They hold the belief that the mountain is guarded by a great spirit called Skell, who possesses immense wisdom and protects the land and its people.

Skell, Spirit of the Above World, plays a significant role in the mythology of various Native American tribes, particularly in the Southwest.

One of the most enduring tales surrounding Mount Shasta is that of the mystical city of Telos, said to be hidden within the mountain. According to believers, Telos is a thriving underground city inhabited by an advanced civilization known as the Lemurians. These ancient beings, the legends claim, escaped the destruction of their homeland, Lemuria, and found refuge within Mount Shasta's secret tunnels. Many claim to have encountered these Lemurians, describing them as tall, enlightened beings who impart wisdom and spiritual guidance to those who are deemed worthy.

My dad was working really late at night in his "fish farm"(as he calls it) with one of his employees. My dad and his employees were the one ones in the building. It was almost midnight and my dad's "farm" was actually a small house but is purposely built to house fish tanks. The house is surrounded by trees from all sides, making it very dark outside. Anyway, they were packing up some fishes to import when suddenly, the bell rang. Now this was almost midnight so it's really strange that someone would visit at the hour, but my dad sent his employee to check. There was no one outside. My dad thought it was just some kids trolling so he and his employee went back to work. After a few minutes, the bell rang again. This time, my dad checked the bell himself but no one was there. By that time they were getting frustrated but they went to continue their work. After a few minutes, it rang again. My dad thought the bell was broken so he checked. Then he remembered that the bell was unplugged by one of his employees to be repaired the next day, because it was broken and cannot be used.

The Ghost Month is a traditional Chinese festival rooted in Buddhist and Taoist beliefs. This annual event, typically observed in the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, is a time when it is believed that the gates of the underworld open, releasing the spirits of the deceased to roam the earthly realm. The Ghost Month is a cultural phenomenon that provides valuable insight into the Chinese perception of life, death, and the metaphysical world, embodying the essence of filial piety, respect for ancestors, and the interplay of fear and reverence towards the supernatural.

Alongside the ghost month, the hungry ghost festival is held on the the 15th day of the seventh lunar month (this year falling on the 30th August) In Chinese Heritage in the Making: Experiences, Negotiations, and Contestations, scholar Selina Ching Chan writes The Festival "involves various rituals aimed at appeasing the hungry ghosts and providing them with offerings. People make food offerings, burn incense and joss paper and set up temporary altars or stages for performances. These offerings are meant to provide nourishment and fulfill the needs of the wandering spirits,”

I am a 100% science-based skeptic who experienced something I can't explain at my office in late May of this year. I need to know if there is anyone out there that has experienced an encounter like mine. 

Due to the pandemic my office building that normally accommodates 1000+ employees has largely been empty save for reduced security teams, maintenance personnel, cleaning staff and a handful of mission critical employees of which I am one.

On May 28th at 1:10 pm I was sitting at my desk, the lone employee at the far end of one of many large, empty 'cubicle city' suites. Despite the emptiness, the fluorescent lighting and outer wall windows provide a comforting brightness. The creepiness factor is supplied by the multitude of small whiteboards hanging outside cubicle entrances all marked with the same date: March 16, 2020, the day of evacuation. 

On this particular day I was reading emails when I heard very distinct heavy footsteps in an almost jogging gait approach my cubicle entrance and stopped abruptly. I looked up expecting to see a maintenance person. Instead there was no one there.
