  • How to Keep the Intimacy Alive for New Parents with Dr. Jessica McCleese

Having a child is one of the greatest joys that we can experience, but it’s also a big adjustment especially for first-time parents.

Every parent can agree that the six weeks following the birth of your child are some of the most chaotic, exhausting, and rewarding weeks of your life. There are so many new responsibilities, things to do, books to read, late nights, and early mornings. So how do you do all this but still find the time to be intimate with your spouse? How do you keep the love alive, especially during the first six weeks?

Today on the show, I’m joined by Dr. Jessica McCleese who is a psychologist and Christian sex therapist.

I sat down to chat about Jessica’s personal story about becoming a certified Christian sex therapist, and how can mothers improve their sex life after having a baby. Plus, she shares tips for new parents to experience intimacy while mama’s body is healing.

Dr. Jessica is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of Virginia and one of less than 200 Certified Christian Sex Therapists in the world. She has a passion for helping married Christians go from just believing that they can have a fulfilling sex life to actually experiencing that intimate connection.

  • Let’s Talk about Consent Parenting with Rosalia Rivera

    **Trigger warning**

This week on the podcast, we are talking about childhood sexual abuse.

According to CDC (2021), “1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience child sexual abuse at some point in childhood, and 91% of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone the child or child’s family knows.”

Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions, and at all levels of education, but 95% of abuse is preventable through education and awareness.

Today on the show, I’m honored to have Rosalia Rivera share with us what we can do to prevent this from happening to our children. We talk about her experience as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and teaching our children about consent.

Rosalia is a consent educator and abuse prevention specialist, sexual literacy advocate, speaker, and the founder of CONSENTparenting™, the host of the AboutCONSENT™ podcast, and creator of CONSENTwear™.  She is also a CSA (child sexual abuse) survivor, turned thriver.

She teaches adult and child sex abuse survivors, that are parents, how to confidently keep their kids safer with abuse prevention tools! She helps parents learn how to educate their children on body safety, boundaries, and consent so that they can empower their children to prevent abuse.

Special offer from Rosalia: Use code CONSENTCULTURE to get 50% off of any of her workshops!

  • Kelly Van Zandt’s Powerful Postpartum

This episode is for all the new mamas out there.

Let’s talk about a thriving postpartum. Most moms spend a lot of time preparing for the birth of their precious baby but don’t know how to prepare well or experience the best time in postpartum.

However, the truth is that while postpartum time can be mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausting, we can thrive during it.56

In this episode of The WHoly Mom chat, we discuss exactly that with my special guest, Kelly Van Zandt.

Kelly is the author of the new book Powerful Postpartum, a certified DONA doula, and a spiritual mentor.

Kelly believes that the early moments of motherhood are one of the most transformational of a woman’s life. Kelly presents a fresh and empowering perspective on the postpartum period as one filled with tremendous potential for growth and an opportunity to rediscover the woman’s truest essence.

Today’s episode is dedicated to embracing the transformation through postpartum and motherhood. Kelly’s search for the spiritual significance of motherhood started as she sat on an empty bench to let herself cry in New York while on a walk with her husband and newborn.

  • Keya Wingfield's Journey Through Post Truamtic Stress Disorder

Today on the show, we have Keya Wingfield.

Keya describes herself as a Richmonder. Chef. Entrepreneur. Instructor. Mom. This is Keya Wingfield. The culinary education is from Virginia, but the love and passion come from Bombay, where she was born and raised. But this isn't "Indian Food." It's food by an Indian. Like Keya, it's complex, diverse...and definitely bold.

Most people know her as the winner of the recent Food Network's Spring Baking Championship in Season 7. However, most people don't know that Keya and her family were experiencing a tragic loss while the episodes of the Spring Baking Champion were airing.

Trigger warning: Please be prepared as there will be some discussion that may trigger some folks.

Keya shared the maternal birth traumatic experience she had with her son Daksh, presenting post-traumatic disorder symptoms or even post-partum post-traumatic disorder. Having a c-section, her newborn being admitted to the NICU for 8 weeks, daily visits to the hospital with the fresh c-section wounds, inability to hold him, and the emotional exhaustion to deal with the stress if your baby will make it? These are all experiences that can trigger PTSD symptoms in mothers.

If you or your loved one is experiencing any of the symptoms discussed today, I urge you to seek professional help. I have included articles in the website show notes that you can learn more about maternal PTSD and how to find a trained PTSD or trauma counselor.

As we wrap up May Mental health awareness month, I want to remind you to take care of yourself. I understand your pain.

You do not have to suffer in silence. Avoiding or numbing your pain is not the solution. You will experience the impact of undealt trauma in your life at some point.

It is best to lift your chin up, acknowledge the pain, process the grief, seek professional help and work on yourself now. Your life is way too important to live in survival mode. You deserve to be thriving and live your best life now.

Thank you so much for joining me this week on The Wholy Mom Chat! Please share this episode with all the women you know.

  • Empowering Single Moms

Hey Mama! I am so glad you are here! I am your host Jennifer James on The WHoly Mom Chat!

In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, we are dedicating today’s episode to single mothers and empowering them to make the changes necessary to move forward in their lives.

Parenting is too important a responsibility to bear alone. Yet, so many mothers are forced to do just that due to a variety of situations. Many single moms struggle at some point as we can simply not do everything on our own. It also plays a toll on our mental health and the kid’s mental health. It’s in our hands to seek the support we need to function to the best of our ability and thrive instead of survive.

In today’s episode, I will be chatting with Andrea Starr and Mary Miller of Forward Foundation. We discuss how to empower single mothers, why good mental health is essential for moms, and Andrea’s journey from an abusive relationship to being a single mother to living her best life now.

If you are a single mom, please take inventory of your mental state, recognize the signs and seek professional help if you need support. Feel free to connect with me if I can serve you in your healing journey through:

  • Mother's Day

“The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation.” - James E. Faust

I wanted to do something special for my mom for this Mother’s Day. So I came up with the idea of doing a tribute along with my sisters through my podcast. In this episode, we will be sharing a tribute to our mom, Fehmeeda.

We will be talking about lessons we have learned from my mom, habits we have adopted, our fondest memories, and some encouragement for our listeners. It was an emotional chat as the feelings associated with our thoughts were pretty raw. We all live in different countries. Ruby, my oldest sister, lives in Dubai with my parents. Rufi, my third sister, lives in Canada. We have not met in person for about 2 years now. I am the youngest of 4 sisters.

You will hear some laughs and some tears throughout this episode. Here you will also learn about my background and how our family was growing up which might be a shocker to some of you. I am ethnically from Pakistan. I was brought up in Dubai. Moved to Toronto, Canada to pursue my Bachelors and then worked in the corporate world. I lived there for about 11 years before I relocated to Richmond, VA. So, get ready to hear our tribute to our mom!

Mom, we love you. We so appreciate all your support and never giving up on us even when we wanted to. We will forever be grateful for who we are because you poured into us selflessly, fiercely, courageously and even when it was tough for you, you blessed us with the best! We respect you! We honor you today and everyday!

To all the women who have lost their mom, or are feeling broken inside, who desire to be moms, who have lost their children, or may be alone, you are not forgotten. Sending you hugs and prayers.

Don’t ever underestimate the power of your influence. You Matter!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas!
