Well... this week's episode is a day late.

Which, considering what this episode is about, is actually pretty damn appropriate.

Because caregiving has a funny way of making you feel like you've stepped out of your own life.

For weeks, everything revolved around Mom — the hospital, rehab, doctors, decisions, phone calls, paperwork, and whatever crisis was waiting around the next corner.

Meanwhile, the rest of my life was apparently standing outside the door holding a clipboard.

Bills? Still there.
Laundry? Still there.
Mom's house? Definitely still there.
My husband? Thankfully, still there too.

And after seven weeks, I started realizing just how much of my regular life had been put on hold.

This episode is about that weird part of caregiving when you haven't stopped taking care of your parent, but you also can't keep ignoring everything else forever.

It's about the stuff that piles up, the decisions that keep multiplying, cleaning out a parent's home, trying to find a home that will work when Mom comes home, and making room for the people and parts of your life that still matter.

Including my marriage.

Because somewhere between rehab, paperwork, packing boxes and trying to figure out what happens next, my husband and I still need to be us.

Not caregivers.

Not problem-solvers.

Not the people having another conversation about Mom.

Just us.

And I'm realizing that maybe caregiving isn't about finding some magical balance where everything gets equal attention.

Maybe it's more like triage.

What has to happen today?

What can wait?

And what can I completely ignore without causing an actual disaster?

Yeah.

We're talking about that.

Because you're probably doing more than you realize.

And sometimes getting through the day without everything completely going off the rails...

counts.

Getting an aging parent to a doctor’s appointment is easy… until it isn’t.

In this episode of The Wicked Daughter, Mom is settling into rehab and starting to make real progress. She’s getting stronger, going to PT and OT, getting dressed, getting out of bed—and suddenly, we have a new problem:

How the hell do we get her to a doctor’s appointment?

In the hospital, the doctors came to Mom. Now that she’s in rehabilitation, Mom has follow-up appointments with specialists, and that means figuring out wheelchair transportation, scheduling, paperwork, medications, meals, therapy—and how to get an 88-year-old recovering from a serious injury safely from Point A to Point B.

I quickly learned that medical transportation for seniors and wheelchair users is its own entire world.

Rehab arranged transportation, which sounded wonderfully simple… until I found out that insurance doesn't cover it.

And apparently, getting an aging parent five miles down the road in a wheelchair-accessible van is considered a luxury experience.

Let's just say it was expensive enough to make me suddenly very interested in learning how to fold a wheelchair myself.

And then I saw the van.

It had a ramp. Mom stayed in her wheelchair. No transferring her into a car. No lifting. No wrestling a wheelchair into a trunk.

Okay.

I understood the cost a little better.

Not happily.

But I understood.

This episode is about one of those caregiving realities nobody really prepares you for: transportation becomes a major part of caregiving when an aging parent can no longer easily get in and out of a regular car.

And while I was figuring out how to get Mom to appointments, I was also starting to realize that transportation wasn't just about one doctor's visit.

I was going to have to think about how Mom would eventually get around once she came home.

Would she be walking? Would she still need a wheelchair? Could she transfer into a car? Would we need a different vehicle?

Apparently, I wasn't shopping for a car.

I was trying to predict the future.

And I didn't have a crystal ball.

Just a rental car, a wheelchair, and a growing sense that I had somehow been promoted to Director of Mom's Transportation Department.

A month earlier, I was sitting beside my mom’s hospital bed, watching a machine breathe for her and wondering if she was going to make it.

Now?

She was getting ready to leave the hospital.

Not for home. Not yet.

She was heading to long-term care rehab — and for the first time in weeks, it felt like we might actually be moving in the right direction.

But if you’ve learned anything about caregiving, you know better than to assume the hard part is over just because someone is medically cleared for discharge.

Because getting an aging parent out of the hospital is apparently a multi-step process involving medical records, wound care, transportation, waiting... and a healthcare system that doesn't exactly make things easy for caregivers.

But then we arrived at rehab.

And suddenly there were no monitors.

No blinking lights.

No alarms.

No oxygen tank.

There was a dining room. Menus. Dessert. Visitors. PT. OT. And eventually, something I wasn't sure I was ready to believe:

Mom was getting better without any major setbacks.

She was feeding herself. Getting out of bed and into a wheelchair. Going to therapy. Getting dressed in actual clothes. Seeing friends. Eating meals in the dining room.

After six weeks in a hospital bed, those might sound like small things.

To a caregiver, they can feel enormous.

But here's the part nobody really talks about:

When you've been in crisis mode for long enough, it can be incredibly hard to relax when something is finally going right.

You're happy.

You're hopeful.

And you're still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

In this episode of The Wicked Daughter, I’m deep in the trenches of finding a skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation facility for my aging parent—which, honestly, feels a lot like using a dating app. You keep expanding your radius, hoping someone will accept you, and trying not to take the rejection personally.

Just when I thought I had a plan for Mom's hospital discharge and rehabilitation, hospital administration dropped a bomb: Mom was scheduled for a "minor" foot procedure on Monday.

A procedure that was apparently one of the primary reasons she was admitted in the first place.

Yet somehow...

Nobody bothered to tell me.

And that's when the caregiver rage begins.

Because you can't ask about what you don't know.

But somehow, when you're the family caregiver, you're still expected to know.

Mom was finally getting better.

Her lungs were improving. Her heart was stable. Her broken leg was healing.

So why were we suddenly talking about hospital discharge?

Discharge? She's Not Even Out of Bed!!

That was the moment I realized caregiving was changing.

I wasn't just trying to get my 88-year-old mom through a medical crisis anymore. I was suddenly trying to figure out what came next—rehab, long-term care, her independence, and what all of this meant for the life we'd built.

I thought I finally understood what happened after a hospital stay: you went home, or you went to rehab.

Then someone introduced me to an acute care hospital—a type of hospital I'd never even heard of.

So what exactly is an acute care hospital? How is it different from a regular hospital or rehabilitation facility? Who takes care of patients there? And why would an aging parent need one?

In this episode, I take you inside the next chapter of my mom's recovery after being hit by a car and surviving surgeries, AFib, aspiration pneumonia, a ventilator, and a long hospital stay.

When my mom was admitted to the hospital after being hit by a car, I made a decision that would weigh heavily on me for weeks.

I didn't give the hospital her Do Not Resuscitate order.

It wasn't because I didn't know her wishes.

I did.

It wasn't because I wasn't willing to honor them.

I was.

I believed this accident wasn't the situation she had envisioned when she made that decision. She had been living independently, staying active, and enjoying life. I believed she deserved every reasonable chance to recover.

Then, her cardiologist looked at me and quietly asked, "You know her wishes, don't you?"

That single question forced me to confront one of the hardest moments I've faced as a caregiver.
