The Wisdom Journey

In this episode, Stephen explores the final four visions of Zechariah, which offer a glimpse of God's future glory for His people. In these visions, Zechariah sees a lampstand, a flying scroll, a woman in a basket, and four chariots. These visions remind us that God is a just God who will judge sin and evil, but also that He will ultimately triumph over sin and bring about a glorious future for His people.

Those who are leaders among God’s people need to be examples of faithfulness in their personal walk with the Lord. They also need to be faithful in encouraging fellow believers and even rebuking them when necessary. The prophet Haggai exemplifies these qualities.

God’s justice does not contradict His grace; in fact, it highlights His grace. Zephaniah reminds us that even when His warnings are ignored and righteous judgment is imminent, He graciously offers hope, both now and for the future to all who will turn to Him.

This lesson explores the book of Habakkuk and how the prophet grapples with the issue of evil and suffering in the world. Stephen dispels the myth that becoming a Christian means that all problems go away, and explains that Habakkuk asks God why evil is allowed to go unchecked. God responds by revealing that He is preparing the Babylonians as an instrument of judgment and that they, too, will be judged. We may not understand what God is doing, but we can trust Him as the sovereign Lord who will always do the right thing at just the right time. The primary lesson of Habakkuk is that we can trust God even in the midst of confusion and uncertainty.

In this episode, the focus is on the book of Nahum and the downfall of the city of Nineveh. The prophet Nahum delivers a message from God to the people of Nineveh, warning them that their time is up and their judgment is certain. Despite hearing the truth through Jonah and enjoying God's mercy in the past, the next generation of Assyrians returned to their idolatry and sin, leading to their destruction by the Babylonians. Stephen emphasizes the importance of passing on an understanding of the gospel to the next generation and not standing in their way, as well as the truth that while God is patient with unbelievers and desires true repentance, He will not overlook sin.

It’s common for us us to be fascinated and intrigued by biblical prophecy. But when you read the book of Micah, you’re reminded that biblical prophecy is not designed to entertain or captivate us. It’s given primarily to glorify the God of prophecy. It alerts us to the truly important things in life, and moves us to greater faithfulness in serving Him. Today, this Wisdom Journey comes to the Old Testament book of Micah. There’s an important lesson that every person needs to know. When there is no confession and repentance of sin, divine judgment is the inevitable outcome. It may not happen right away, but God deals with all unresolved sin. The biblical account of Jonah is a compelling story. The runaway prophet repents and obeys God’s commands to him. A people who seem to be beyond hope respond in faith to god’s offer of salvation. But for Jonah, the story doesn’t end well. Today on The Wisdom Journey, you’ll be reminded that it’s essential to know the truth to obey God. But just as important is the attitude with which you do it. Your attitude must also conform to God’s Word.

Have you ever been given a fresh start? Maybe you really messed up but were given a second chance. Jonah did, and he obediently preached to a people that he refused to at first. Jonah needed to learn what we all do: that we must never put limits on God’s mercy and grace. We should never presume that some people are beyond His reach and concern.
