This June, we will celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. For our second episode, we will talk about something that viscerally links us to our national identity and history daily – we will talk about food.
In our wayfinding today, our North Star will be these curiosities:
1) What do we mean by Filipino food, and who gets to define it?
2) How do our dishes in the present day connect us to our history? And–
3) How can interrogating the systems that turn ingredients grown on farms into prepared food on our tables make us confront the challenges of our time?
As someone who delights not only in tasting but also in learning about Filipino food, the connections of our food traditions with those around the world have me curious. As we can see from our guiding curiosities, when we ask questions about our sustenance, we see how it inevitably connects us to our history and our present.
Furthermore, I am also interested in how food intersects with my other interests, from climate and environment to human and land rights. After all, even just a cursory investigation of how our food is produced quickly leads to questions of power and justice. In other words, food is inherently political.
Tune in for a delicious conversation featuring this episode's field guide, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria and youth explorer Emanuel La Viña.
