This commandment speaks to the heart of who God is and why should we live our lives this way in the first place. He is the Lord – the only one, the eternal one, the uncreated one, Lord most high, Jehovah, the creator of all things – and we should make sure we position Him as such always…

God’s name reveals his character and his desire for relationship. It deserves respect too so how can we ensure that we give God’s name its rightful honour and we don’t misuse it. This morning we dedicated young Ezra and we explore his biblical namesake. Ezra taught the exiles about the importance of God’s Word and the reality of God’s rescue plan. We can also learn from the prophet’s teaching as we look towards Jesus reaching out to us today in our own exile. He is our hope amidst the worst of circumstances – God’s ultimate plan to save us from sin and death.

In this short talk from our All Age service for Remembrance Sunday, we focus on the many people in the Bible who God remembered in their toughest moments. We can take great comfort that He remembers us in the same way – whatever our circumstances and challenges, He loves us and is for us. In turn we need to remember Him – to be reminded - to praise and worship and honour Him too

It can be one of the easiest commandments to break as we strive to remain useful, productive and busy. How can we prioritise and make special effort to seek rest, recreation, reflection and the chance to remember? To leave space for our souls to catch up with our bodies.

The latest in our series of commandments is unique as the only one that contains a promise. But how will we “live long in the land the Lord our God is giving us”? By respecting and appreciating and even forgiving our parents. Honouring not only our biological parents but all those who go before us and form the community around us. However supportive and caring or difficult and distant our relationship was with our own parents / children, there is always room for more honour.

The 6th commandment in our ‘Just10’ series explores the call to avoid murder and to resist taking the life of another. But Jesus goes further (as always), challenging us to exercise self-control and sidestep reacting with extreme emotion. If becoming angry with another person is as bad as taking their life, how can any of us stand in God’s sight? Only by the grace of God…

Marriage matters to God and people matter to God. In our relationships let us recognise the power of temptation and the related consequences of our actions. We must be careful and on our guard, knowing that adultery begins in the mind long before it disrupts our every day lives.
