The genius of the Heidelberg Catechism is its "Law and Gospel" structure, which its primary author believed to be the fundamental doctrine of the church. This structure -- also known as "Guilt, Grace, and Gratitude" -- is a bulwark to the comfort which the catechism seeks to provide the believer.
