The Essentials are the core biblical priorities laid out in the New Testament that define every Christian's life. There are six of them: Worship, Bible Study, Prayer, Fellowship, Service, and Evangelism. These biblical actions encourage and strengthen our devotion to our Savior Jesus Christ, deepen our love for God and for other people, and cause us to grow in personal holiness.

Through David's confrontation with Goliath, we see that what made this shepherd boy willing to risk everything wasn't courage, strength, or skill, but a consuming passion for God's glory—he couldn't bear to see the living God insulted and dishonored.

First Samuel 17 doesn’t primarily focus on David’s courage—although he was courageous. It doesn’t primarily focus on David’s strength or skill. Instead, this scene puts the glory of God on display. It is crucial that we as believers understand this: there is no one more passionate about God’s glory than God Himself.

In Matthew 4, we have considered the three temptations of Jesus by Satan Himself, informing us as Christians on how Jesus responded—and how we must also respond to temptation. On today’s program, Tom concludes his exposition of Matthew 4 by giving us three crucial reminders to recall when tempted, followed by three powerful implications of Christ’s victory over temptation.

The third and final temptation that Jesus faced in the wilderness was ultimately about exchanging His soul for power or prosperity. The real temptation wasn't to worship Satan but to receive what God had already promised Jesus—the kingdoms of this world—without following God's way of suffering and death and without waiting for God's timing after the resurrection.

On today's program, we continue examining Satan's second temptation recorded in Matthew 4—his suggestion that Jesus jump from the Temple. Tom shows us how this seemingly spiritual act was actually self-promotion, masquerading as God's purposes.

In Matthew 4 we find Satan's second temptation in the wilderness. Pastor Tom reveals how Satan tempted Christ to pursue personal glory instead of God's glory alone—and how Christ's victorious response teaches us that God's glory must always be our pursuit, never our own.

Today we continue examining Christ's first temptation. Pastor Tom Pennington shows us five ways our needs cross into sin—neglect, excess like gluttony or laziness, methods contrary to God's Word, pursuits contrary to God's design, and idolatrous passion that places physical desires above loving God.

On today's broadcast, we examine Satan's first temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. Pastor Tom reveals the divine pattern for overcoming physical temptation—showing us how neglect, rebellion, and excess can ensnare us, and how Jesus' victorious response teaches us to consistently overcome the physical temptations that assault us daily.

In this series, we continue exploring the temptation of Jesus Christ by examining a most unique theological question: whether Jesus was able to sin and what makes His temptations both similar to and different from ours.
