In this episode of The Maker’s Collective Podcast we chat with the magical Ryan Antooa. He’s a writer, musician, dancer, designer, and on and on - he’s the epitome of a creative and we’re so grateful that he made space to join us on the show. We have a real, honest conversation in this episode (he asks us lots of questions too!), and touch on everything from relationships, to art, to the racism he and his family have experienced since moving to Canada. He also shares two poems from his latest collection, Channel Blue, with us - like we said above, magical.  It’s a powerful conversation, and we’re so excited for all of you to listen.

  • Enough is Enough – Black Lives Matter and We Have Work To Do

    We’ve rebranded!

This podcast used to be called ‘The Maker’s Collective Podcast’ and is now called ‘The Work Different, Live Different Podcast by The Maker’s Collective’. You’ll notice that we’ve updated the look and feel along with the name, which will appear across all of our episodes, old and new.

Last week (on June 3rd) we came together, along with 30,000+ people from across the Waterloo region, to march in solidarity with our local Black Lives Matter organization, in protest of police brutality. As we're sure you are aware, these marches and protests have been happening all over the world, even in the midst of COVID-19, and today, we want you to know where we stand. The Maker's Collective is absolutely, 100%, unequivocally ANTI- RACIST - all Black Lives Matter, racism and injustice will no longer be tolerated, and change needs to happen yesterday. As privileged, white, cisgender, heterosexual people, we know that we have a lot of work to do. We know we have a lot of listening, learning, unlearning, and tough conversations to do and have in the weeks, months, and years ahead. We also know that we aren't going to get it right all of the time - however we are going to keep 'doing'. This special episode is our pledge to all of you in this beautiful community that we are committed to doing this work and to building a company that is actively anti-racist. Oh, and if you don't like it, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

  • Selling in the Time of Social Distancing: How To Approach Selling By Leading With Service & Empathy

In this episode of The Maker’s Collective Podcast we talk about selling in the time of COVID-19 and social distancing that we’re living in right now. Over the past several weeks we’ve had a lot of people reach out to us with questions around how to sell, which at the best of times is a hard thing to do, so it’s completely understandable that in this time where the world is struggling it would feel even harder to put yourself and your work out there.  The thing is, if you own a small business and you need it to keep functioning right now, then you have to sell AND it’s ok to sell. What becomes important is to ensure you’re leading with service and empathy at the forefront of everything you do. We know that this is an incredibly difficult time for everyone, and we want to stress that if what you need right now is to be gentle with yourself then please listen and honour that, but if you’ve been struggling with wanting and needing to sell, then here are our suggestions:

    • Gut check your business
    • Does your audience still need what you’re selling?
    • What do they care about right now?
    • What are their new pain points?
    • How can you pivot what you offer to help support your audience?
    • Lead With Service
    • Can you make any of your programming/events/products free or more accessible-y priced?
    • It’s ok to sell right now
    • Think about your pricing structure - sell with integrity (what can you make accessible/free and what are your main offers?)
    • Can you set up a tiered pricing structure with your offerings?
    • Could you provide products/services at a pay-what-you-can model?

    • The Subconscious of Imposter Syndrome & How To Fight Feelings of Unworthiness With Jillian Parekh

In this episode of The Maker’s Collective Podcast we chat remotely with Imposter Syndrome Expert and Coach, Jillian Parekh. Woooooooo, this conversation is timely and cuts right to the core of how these productivity and mindset killers actually work. There’s so much happening inside our brains at any given moment, and so much that we have very little control over. In order to truly understand what’s going on we have to consistently work on controlling how we react to the negative stories we’re telling ourselves - which we know is easier said than done! Jillian gives us some great tips around how to fight feelings of unworthiness and imposter syndrome though:

      • Start keeping an accomplishment journal
      • Constantly try to challenge the negative thoughts and self-talk you have
      • As a business owner set realistic expectations for what you can do and accomplish in a day/week/month/year and be gentle with yourself if you don’t achieve your goals
      • Never stop working on your mindset
      • We hope you enjoy listening to this chat as much as we enjoyed having it!
