  • There's no trick to resilience

There is NO trick to unlocking resilience. No one skill or tool or practice will guarantee that you will never be overwhelmed by stress or trauma. We can’t trick our body’s survival system. And I don’t think we want to even though people try all the time.

There are 3 things that make something feel stressful or traumatic to your nervous system. And you can apply these to situations, relationships, memories, thoughts or injuries, pretty much any experience you’ve had long or short term, present, past or future. Isolation, uncertainty and lack of control. It could be any one of those things or any combination of them.

The good news is that knowing those three components of stress and trauma, we can customize our own behavior to build the kind of unshakeable resilience that so many people are looking for. But it’s not a trick.

  • Stress and resilience in leadership and corporate culture with Jodi Woelkerling

Resilient culture specialist with decades of experience in the corporate world. She helps businesses successfully navigate the constant challenges and competing priorities in the modern workplace by building a corporate culture of resilience  that extends from leadership to the individual level. Jodi believes that resilience is the key to long term collaborative and productive success in every business organization.

I'm particularly interested in this topic because as many of you know I worked for 12 years in corporate fitness. As part of that contract we taught multiple classes through the lunch hours and what I noticed was that certain departments gravitate towards certain types of classes. I had a lot of IT people in yoga and HR tended to show up in the high intensity kickboxing classes.  It seemed like the more exposure they had to people the more stress. It was a fascinating phenomena in that particular corporate culture.

As a fitness professional I and my fellow trainers were there as part of their health benefits package. Exercise as part of an overarching resilience program, I’m not sure that was even a thing. But the more we understand the nervous system and how it affects every aspect of physical and mental health the more important that becomes.

For all you fitness professionals out there who are looking for ways to scale your business and market your growing value, this will be an important discussion.

  • Standing for your own ethical voice

Todays solo episode discusses ethical communication, understanding intention and trusting your inner  voice in your business and personal life.

... sometimes in our desire to make the “right” decisions in business is sometimes rooted in our fear of making a “wrong” decision, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by too many voices.

The loudest voices are sometimes the last ones who matter. They’re the folks who aren’t your ideal client, have no skin in the game, have no idea what you do or why you do it and usually don’t know you at all.

Occasionally the opposite is true also, loud voices can come from people very close to us who are afraid of change and or are trying to keep you safe.

There are a lot of decisions that need to be made in any business. (hence the black turtleneck) When you’re just getting started it’s really difficult to sift through all the advice out there. We all want to do the right thing. And no one wants to make a mistake. Especially one that will cost you beaucoup dinero.

But listen, there is no decision that you can make that can’t be changed. That includes what you say and how you say it.

  • Success is not an accident: Profitability pitfalls and strategies for fit pros with Dr. Lance Knaub

Hey fit pro’s today we’re going to be spending some time at the intersection of burnout and business. We’ve talked about burnout in the past where it comes from and how you can recover on an ongoing basis but we haven’t really looked at the effect of burnout on your fitness business and how it can affect our bottom line.

Many of us start as independent contractors in the fitness industry and struggle to break into a sustainable long term business model before crushing burnout and overuse injuries ends our career. Today we’ll be diggin deep into how fitness businesses can support their fit pros and how individuals can find a balance between financial success and self care.

If you’re a fitness professional as soon as you get that certification you are an entrepreneur. Maybe even before that. That business is you. It’s an integral part of you. Even if you don’t have a brick and mortar shop, studio or gym. I would say especially if you don’t, you need to take extra care to burnout proof yourself because if your body fails your business fails.

I know how overwhelming all things business is for fit pros in the wellness space. There’s a lot to know and as independent contractors very little support from certifying agencies. And that can lead to trying to do all things and be all things to all of our people. That’s a recipe for burnout no matter what your business is.

So lots to discuss today and my guest today has lots of experience and wisdom to share.

Dr. Lance Knaub, Best Selling author of The 4% Break-Thru, helps entrepreneurs with 6 figure businesses to avoid overwhelm and burnout, and instead create the life they love while they are scaling by developing a leadership team and creating a self sufficient business that is an asset. Lance founded Breakthru Physical Therapy + Fitness which is now operated by a fearless leadership team.

  • What's your real job?

Last week we talked to Rachel Brenke and in that conversation a couple of themes came up that  I'd like to revisit and reinforce.  We talked about getting clear about what you want your life to look like in order to figure out how your business is going to serve you. We talked about how using that awareness is important in protecting ourselves from burnout and overwhelm and we discussed a little bit about how important it is to be ok with discovering maybe entrepreneurship isn’t for you.

These are things that are missing from most general fitness certifications and if you've been around a while you may have learned the hard way but do you really believe that everyone needs to learn the hard way? Because I don’t think that’s necessary.

  • Unpack that Money Baggage

My original intention with this podcast was to speak specifically to fitness professionals however what I’ve found is that many of our issues overlap no matter what industry you work in. (get it Work IN?)

That makes sense because we’re all human and we each have our own Work IN to discover better ways to deal with our internal state so that we can be better humans, better friends, better employees and better employers. And the source of all of that personal and professional improvement and development starts with an understanding of where we are in our own state. So I think that’s why there’s so much overlap in our discussions here. And today will be no different.

Last week we heard from Dennis Harhalakis money coach from Cambridge money coaching about how emotions connect to our money behavior. If you missed that episode it came out of February 21 and is # 65. Check it out when you get a chance.

Today I wanted to talk about money baggage. During our conversation last week Dennis brought up the point that a lot of how we treat money, how we feel about money and business and our behaviors around money are rooted in our childhood experiences or lack of experience and influenced by how we saw others handling money.

That’s our money baggage. And that baggage can weigh us down and hold us back financially in both our professional and personal lives. It becomes a subconscious filter through which we make all our money decisions including how we save, how we spend, how we invest, IF we invest, and how we price our services.

  • Communicating permission, exploration and play in pain care and trauma with Colleen Jorgensen

Please welcome Colleen Jorgensen back to the podcast. She is an osteopath, a therapeutic Pilates yoga and Somatics teacher and a graduate of pain care U.'s professional pain care program. Colleen is  the owner and founder of Stillness in Motion, where she combines manual therapy and current neuroscience research with creative embodied movement mindfulness awareness, self regulation practices and a distinctive compassionate approach to pain care. Living in chronic pain herself for over a decade has given Colleen an invaluable first person perspective on the day to day challenges those in pain face. That perspective inspired her creation of Discover to Recover: Move from pain to potential, her six week online pain care program to empower people with knowledge, awareness and practical tools.

Colleen is a brilliant compassionate instructor who loves teaching and offers many courses, workshops and teacher trainings and embodied anatomy, somatic movement and compassionate creative pain care. And that's why I thought she would be a fantastic resource for us on the work in for today's conversation, because we're taking a deep dive into communication, specifically how instructors communicate, but not just instructors also on the student side, how we can help our clients and students receive that communication.

Colleen appeared on The Work IN previously on the Work IN in our 4 part chronic pain series in early 2021.  Episodes 13, 14, 15 + 17
