Last weekend I witnessed a summer camp for mostly grown ups with intense interest playing the guitar.
If it was yoga we would call it a week long intensive. Maybe a retreat. And we would weigh the cost/benefit of the continuing education and whether or not the credits are pre approved. Probably because that sounds better to adults. As adults why do we need to justify taking a week out of our real world to indulge ourselves in our passion? That thing we love to do that’s only for ourselves.
What if we could create our own summer camp to nourish and feed our soul? What if it lasted all summer? Or maybe all year? What would your summer camp look like?

Today I had originally planned to do a solo episode to talk about the connection aspect of reclaiming your health and resilience. This 4 part series was inspired by my interview with Jason Sapp and our discussion around taking back control of your own health. We’ve talked about sleep, nutrition and movement and the things you can do, the small simple things you can do every single day that can have big lasting effects not just on your physical health but also your mental health. The last piece to the puzzle is connection. And it’s a big piece. Bigger than just one solo episode. So I thought I’d bring in some examples of how we can find connections between our health choices and our health and resilience
Connection could mean mind-body connection, from simple curiosity to a growing awareness of yourself and what you need from moment to moment physically, mentally or emotionally. And it could be connecting with other people. Building friendships or finding a community of support. Your tribe of people who always have your back.
In the context of trauma recovery, addiction recovery, interpersonal connection is critical because it’s one of the first things that is lost when the nervous system is overwhelmed. And that makes sense because you can’t trust other people when you’re in a state of protection. Live too long in that state and you lose the ability to trust yourself too and that makes it even harder to stay connected to others.
We’re going to explore some of those things deeper over the next few episodes but I did an interview the other day that I think gives an interesting overview of how the systems in the body are interconnected. Specifically for women throughout the stages of our lives from puberty through childbearing and into menopause. It’s interesting to me because a lot of times we don’t recognize that our stage of life has changed until our body makes us pay attention. And even though we don’t have control over the fact that our hormones change through the course of our life, we can affect how we experience the symptoms of those changes by making intentional health choices around sleep, nutrition and movement and community.
My guest today is Beth Kruger. Beth is a women's wellness educator, yoga instructor and coach. She’s spent her career supporting women through childbirth, lactation, pregnancy and fertility. She’s a business owner and entrepreneur and has led many women’s wellness retreats all over the world. Her current focus is on menopause and helping women over 40 through this transition.

You reap the benefits and consequences of everything you do. So that could be work, food, exercise, entertainment, relationships. That’s what this series is all about. Reclaiming your health and resilience is within your control. Everything we do can be a lever. Nutrition is a very powerful lever. So today, Nutrition is part 3 of this series and it’s going to be big. Everything you consume becomes a part of you and that makes what you eat a very intimate relationship. But unlike relationships with other people you have complete control of this one.
Learn how what you eat and your relationship with food can affect your nervous system and what mindset shifts you need to make in order to make lasting changes to your health through nutrition.

Today is part 2 of our reclaim your health and resilience series where we explore the practical tools and skills that you can use anywhere anytime to influence your own health. There are 4 aspects we’re discussing. Last week was sleep, this week we’re looking at movement. I use the word movement on purpose instead of exercise because sometimes exercise can have a very prescriptive connotation. And because the body can’t really tell the difference between a walk on a treadmill at the gym and a walk around the block with your dog, we can include any and all activity as a valid choice to improve our overall health.
Movement of all kinds is a powerful influencer on all aspects of our health including of course our mighty nervous system. The reason of course is because all movement is accepted by the nervous system as a kind of challenge. And practice rising to that challenge in relative safety like with purposeful movement or exercise builds resilience across all bio-psycho-social-spiritual connections.

Now you might think that you don’t personally have a trauma story or that your stress levels are never that bad. But while most of us might not experience the kind of intense and prolonged trauma that is associated with combat and full blown ptsd, we need to remember that the NS can be affected by anything. Because of that, without a release valve, it can be overwhelmed by anything. And the health issues related to resilience and an overwhelmed nervous system are subtle at first. They're so subtle that most of the time we don’t take action until those problems become raging, medically significant health issues. Like Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety and others. The kinds of diagnoses that demand action.
There are 4 pieces or pillars that we touched on in last week's episode that play a critical role in reclaiming health and resilience that are completely within our control.
Movement, nutrition, sleep and connection. We’re going to talk about each one of those over the next 4 weeks. And hopefully start to untangle some realistic ways that we can start to take back and reclaim our own influence over the quality of life we want. Hopefully some of the things that come up will help you reframe the way you see yourself, the body you live in and maybe, just maybe find some ease in that relationship.
Today I want to kick off our series by looking at sleep. I like to think of sleep as the canary in the coal mine. Often (not always) it’s the first thing we notice when we’re stressed. It’s an easy thing to gauge. How well do you sleep on a regular, consistent basis?

One of my goals on The Work IN is to try to use these conversations to help normalize the experience of trauma so that people don’t feel so alone and so that when we encounter someone in a traumatized state we can hold space for them and extend some grace, maybe even savage grace.
My guest today is a beautiful example of using his own experience to help others.

They say that if you're not growing, you may as well be dying. As harsh as that sounds it may be true. Especially when it comes to continuing education in the wellness space. Health, fitness, wellness, nutrition, medicine, mindset; all of those fields are constantly changing. We learn new things every day about the body that we live in and it takes time for that new understanding to filter out into the general population. Fitness and wellness professionals are a big part of how that information gets out. But only if we make an effort to go and collect it, curate it and then translate it to our peeps. Our population, our community. And in that process we can influence the health and wellbeing of our people in powerful ways while still staying within our scope of practice.
