Welcome back to The Work IN everyone! Lately I’ve been exploring the idea of letting go of old things to make room for new. It comes from the yama of Aparigraha or abundance. When you lean into an abundance mindset, that there's always going to be enough, that you’re always going to be enough for whatever you want to have happen, when you learn to trust that, then you can let go of old stuff, old ideas, old beliefs and can set yourself free.
One of those beliefs that I see crop up time and time again in myself and my clients is this myth that in order to get the health benefits of exercise or yoga it takes a lot of time.
One of the most common excuses people have for why they don’t exercise regularly is because they don’t have time. And beneath that is the belief that taking 2 hours out of your day isn’t with it. You’re not worth it. And as wonderful as a yoga practice is, there’s a common misconception that in order to “do” real yoga it has to be in a zen like studio for 90 minute classes, every day, in cute yoga clothes. Oh and you have to be stick thin and Cirque du Soliel flexible. God if any of those things were actually true I wouldn’t practice yoga either.
Yoga & movement snacks snacks are a way to get more activity throughout your day without having to step out of your day.

Exercise of any kind has been shown to be as effective as a treatment for depression and anxiety as antidepressants in some people although some would say the studies that show this lack some of the quality and stringency that scientists might hope for. I would argue that whenever you are testing the efficacy of something as subjective and variable as human movement it’s almost impossible to control all variables. And when testing yoga as a treatment option when you try to strip out the soft skills of the teacher and only look at the physical prescription of the asana practice you lose so much of the essence of the practice and limit the benefits.
But, having said that,Today I want to highlight 4 things that are baked into a yoga practice that make it a highly effective tool beyond “regular” exercise for relieving depressive symptoms and anxiety.

Welcome to my Happy Belly Kitchen!
This will be an episode we’ll do probably once a month or so and this will be a way to share some simple changes that you can implement immediately for big changes in metabolism. If you adopt and embrace those changes, of course. Keep in mind any changes to your diet or eating pattern will take at least a month or so before you really see results.
We’re going to focus on 3 areas of change. 1 sugar exposure 2 gut health and 3 is mindset around food 4 making it work for you.
We’re going to look at healthy, healthier and healthiest options. How to work with your body for optimal nutrition. How to cook, prep and purge your pantry to make healthy eating easy and fast. Slowly change how you think about food to cut off cravings and find an eating pattern that fits your lifestyle. And of course the best part...the recipes.
Today you'll hear my story and the inspiration for the Happy Belly Kitchen series.

In the world of stress management and trauma informed care, we spend a lot of time talking about fight or flight. That’s typically what people think of when they think “stress”. Fight or flight is also known as sympathetic nervous system activation. Some people also call it arousal. Really it’s anything that gets you up and moving or activates you to take action in some way. That could be action to move toward something or away from something. It covers any action you take from getting out of bed in the morning to pulling an all nighter to study for a test to digging into a pint of ice cream after a fight with your partner. All of that falls under the fight flight response.
There’s another stress state that you may have heard of called Freeze. The Freeze state is part of the parasympathetic side of our nervous system. It can be a little confusing because social engagement and calm also is parasympathetic and we think of freeze as bad and social engagement as good. So today we’re going to work IN to the freeze state and talk about what it is, what it’s purpose is, what it looks like and feels like in humans and how we can safely move out of that state if we find ourselves stuck there.

Brenda Zane is a family advocate, parent coach, host of the podcast Hopestream, and founder of an online community, The Stream, for moms of kids with substance use disorder. Brenda is the mother of four sons, the oldest of whom struggled with an addiction to a high-risk lifestyle and illicit opioids and benzodiazepines for over 5 years. After nearly losing her son to multiple fentanyl overdoses, Brenda left corporate America to serve other families dealing with the fear, confusion and helplessness parents usually feel when they have a child who's misusing drugs or alcohol.
Brenda is a Mayo Clinic Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Parent Coach, and Board Member for Sky’s The Limit Fund, a non-profit which transforms the lives of youth in crisis and their families by providing access to wilderness therapy programs and post-treatment coaching services.
I know Brenda as a health coach and an entrepreneur. I am proud to serve as an advisor member in The Stream Community and have seen first hand what a compassionate heart felt safe space that she has created for the moms who have joined her.
The stigma, shame and guilt that surrounds addiction, substance use and abuse is something that is only compounded by secrecy, uncertainty and isolation. Brenda’s mission is to give parents a place where they can let down their guard, a space without fear of judgement where they can lay down some of that burden and know that they are loved and supported.
Make no mistake, this story is not unique. Addiction comes in many different flavors and it touches every single one of us in some way. Substance use that leads to abuse stripped down is simply external regulation of the nervous system. Because of that every single one of us is susceptible to it in some way.
