On Season 2 Episode 2 of The Worthy Physician Podcast, I sat down with Dr. Mitul Mehta MD. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in retinal diseases. He provides a great viewpoint on burnout and life as a physician. As he points out, it is important to work to live, not live to work. I appreciate his time and insight as he has always been a mentor to me. Not only is he a great physician and person, but what you hear on this podcast is what you get—sincerity and great advice.
Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. If you are in need of medical assistance talk to your physician.

I sat down and graciously talked with Dr. Shalev, an Emergency Room Physician of 16 years who felt that every shift was taking a year off her life. She was able to find a way to reclaim her life and be fully present with her family. She started exploring the world of real estate investing and finally found a way to make recurring income. Now her mission is to share this knowledge with fellow physicians. On this upcoming episode of The Worthy Physician Podcast, she shares her story of burnout, how she pivoted, and where she is now, available to help other physicians.
Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. If you are in need of medical assistance talk to your physician.

Happy New Year [2022] from The Worthy Physician!
Going forward, burnout is real. Self care is not selfish. In each episode, hopefully the listener has learned something. Mindfulness is needed to be practiced. It can be short and simple. Label and honor your emotions. Happiness is found internally not via material things…it is okay to talk about mental health, and motivation can come from the simplest things. In 2022, how are you going to fill your bucket of energy?
Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. If you are in need of medical assistance talk to your physician.

Golden handcuffs: a phrase that came about in the late 1970s referring to financial compensation/allurement to keep individuals of a highly compensated [amount not defined] profession within the company/profession in spite of being unhappy. This is a phrase that has been used to describe medicine. Yet, is do we as physicians experience golden handcuffs or a golden opportunity?
As physicians we meet several people. Do we have the opportunities [golden] that can make a difference? How do we spot them? One’s perspective is influenced by multiple things, all individual.
Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. If you are in need of medical assistance talk to your physician.

In this episode I sat down with Marquis Bradley, a man of many talents and wearer of many hats. This is a young man who is very driven, has put in hours to build is own business from the ground up after hitting bottom. He has never lost faith, sight of goals, and has always stayed positive. It is this positivity and outlook that I try and capture in this episode. In medicine we hit rock bottom, and sometimes lose faith. Let's regain it.

Referring back to episodes 4 & 5 of the podcast regarding Physiology and Burnout, I had to highlight this beautiful conversation I had with Tammy, the dietitian, regarding anxiety. During her podcast episodes, she was very open with her own personal struggles with anorexia as an adolescent and anxiety as an adult. This is a beautiful example of awareness, labeling emotion, and knowing what to do with it. I hope you learn from it and enjoy someone sharing their own experiences and the vulnerability that is shown. It is a strength, not a weakness.

This episode is not numbered, nor will it be. It is simply named after the friend and colleague who took her own life and is the inspiration for this podcast. I sat down with her widower, Larry Schwarm, well-known photographer and retired professor, to discuss the loss of Dr. Bicker.
Physician burnout is real. Suicide is real. Nearly one physician a day dies by suicide.
Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. If you are in need of medical assistance talk to your physician.

In this episode, it is part 2 of the series in this podcast that I sit down with former co-worker and dietitian, Tamaire Ojeda, and explore how nutrition influences us on many levels. We discuss further in depth of change and only if one is ready. While it is not the answer to burnout, it can change how we feel at some level, as food is fuel for our bodies.
