The 'X' Zone Radio/TV Show

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Dr. Bruce Hennigan, physician, author, Christian apologist, playwright, and novelist, for a controversial discussion about violent video games and their possible influence on teenagers and young adults. Hennigan, a practicing radiologist and author of the supernatural Christian thriller series The Chronicles of Jonathan Steel, became interested in the subject while researching depression and cultural influences affecting young people. He subsequently participated in numerous radio interviews examining the question of whether prolonged exposure to violent gaming can influence attitudes and behaviour. Hennigan argues that the issue is more complicated than simply claiming that playing a violent game automatically creates a violent person. In his own writings, he explicitly states that violent video games cannot simply be blamed for killings, acknowledging that violent behaviour has many possible causes. His concern instead focuses on whether hours of immersion in violent entertainment can influence aggression, thinking, emotional responses, social interaction, or an individual's perception of violence—particularly among young people who may already be vulnerable. During this provocative conversation, Rob and Bruce examine first-person shooters, gaming culture, parental responsibility, age ratings, excessive gaming, isolation, depression, aggression, and the difference between fantasy and reality. Hennigan places considerable responsibility on parents, arguing that they need to understand what their children are playing, pay attention to ratings and content, establish appropriate boundaries, and remain actively involved rather than expecting the gaming industry alone to protect young players. The broader scientific debate is more nuanced than the provocative title of this episode suggests, making this exactly the kind of subject worth examining from different perspectives. Join Rob McConnell and Dr. Bruce Hennigan on The 'X' Zone Radio Show as they ask some difficult questions: Can repeated exposure to virtual violence affect real-world behaviour? Are vulnerable teenagers more susceptible than others? Where does parental responsibility begin? And when tragedy occurs, are we looking too quickly for one convenient explanation instead of confronting the much more complicated causes of youth violence? Hennigan's original X Zone appearance on this subject is preserved in the show's archives.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Buddy Piper, veteran entertainment professional and longtime associate of Share International, for an extraordinary conversation about Maitreya, modern-day miracles, mysterious lights in the sky, and what Piper believed was the appearance of a new “Star of Bethlehem.” Before entering the world of spiritual and unexplained phenomena, Piper spent decades in show business, beginning as an actor on The Red Skelton Show and later working extensively in television and theatre. The 'X' Zone archives credit him with helping create the television game show Classic Concentration and with directing, acting in, or producing more than 100 summer-stock productions. In the mid-1980s, Piper became involved with Share International, the organization and magazine associated with British artist and esoteric writer Benjamin Creme. Piper eventually became known as a “Modern Miracles Reporter,” investigating and publicizing phenomena that believers interpreted as spiritual signs—including unusual crosses of light appearing in windows and reports involving religious statues and other unexplained manifestations. Contemporary reporting confirms that Piper travelled to investigate some of these “crosses of light,” although supernatural explanations for such phenomena remain matters of belief rather than established scientific fact. One of Piper's most remarkable claims concerned a mysterious “star” reported in skies around the world. Share International announced in December 2008 that a bright star-like object would appear as a sign heralding the emergence of Maitreya, whom followers describe as a coming “World Teacher.” Videos subsequently appeared online showing unusual luminous objects. Piper believed that what witnesses were observing was not an astronomical star at all, but four enormous spacecraft positioned around the Earth, serving as a modern counterpart to the biblical Star of Bethlehem and announcing Maitreya's public emergence. These claims have not been scientifically established and are presented as Piper's and Share International's spiritual interpretation of the reported sightings. Join Rob McConnell and Buddy Piper on The 'X' Zone Radio Show for a journey through spirituality, UFOs, miracles, prophecy, New Age beliefs, and one of the more unusual interpretations of mysterious objects in our skies. Who—or what—is Maitreya? Were the reported stars simply conventional astronomical or atmospheric phenomena, unidentified objects, or something far more extraordinary? And could humanity really be witnessing signs of a profound spiritual transformation—or are we seeing ancient expectations and modern mysteries becoming intertwined? On The 'X' Zone, the questions are every bit as fascinating as the answers.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes C.J. Ellisson, bestselling author and creator of the deliciously dark V V Inn series. Ellisson's Vampire Vacation, originally published in 2010, introduces readers to a very different kind of Alaskan getaway—a secluded luxury resort designed specifically for the undead. Mixing vampires, murder, mystery, supernatural fantasy, romance, humour, and decidedly adult themes, Ellisson created a paranormal world where checking into the inn might be considerably easier than checking out. At the centre of the story is Vivian, a powerful 580-year-old vampire who operates the V V Inn with her human husband, Rafe. Hidden away in the darkness of Alaska, their unusual resort caters to supernatural guests seeking privacy and extraordinary experiences. Vivian possesses the ability to create convincing physical illusions, allowing the inn to transform itself into the ultimate playground for its immortal clientele. But paradise for vampires suddenly becomes a crime scene when Vivian discovers a corpse inside a locked guest room just before a new group of visitors is scheduled to arrive. Rather than ruin everyone's vacation with the inconvenient matter of a dead body, Vivian and Rafe attempt to quietly uncover the killer themselves. What follows is a supernatural murder mystery filled with secrets, dangerous guests, vampire politics, fantasy, and increasingly complicated circumstances. Vampire Vacation became the opening novel in a much larger fictional universe, followed by titles including The Hunt, Big Game, Blood Legacy, Sharpen the Blade, and Blood Reckoning, along with related prequel and companion stories. Join Rob McConnell and C.J. Ellisson on The 'X' Zone Radio Show as they sink their teeth into the creation of Vampire Vacation, the enduring fascination with vampire mythology, supernatural storytelling, and what it takes to build an entire fictional world around creatures that have terrified—and fascinated—humanity for centuries. What happens when vampires need a vacation? Apparently, they check into the V V Inn... but when murder is added to the room service, things can get bloody very quickly.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Carol Ingley, futurist, high-tech expert, author, publisher, and consultant, for a fascinating discussion about a future that isn't waiting for tomorrow—because much of it is already here. Carol has worked extensively in telecommunications, networks, finance, marketing, satellite technology, and digital transformation, helping organizations understand how rapidly advancing technologies can reshape businesses, industries, and everyday life. Her original appearance on The 'X' Zone described her as a futurist and productivity-growth consultant heading the digital information venture Be a Media Mogul. Carol is the author of The Digital Mindset: How to Retool Your Skills and Rewire Your Brain for the Digital Age, which examines how people can adapt their thinking, creativity, organization, and skills to prosper in an increasingly digital society. Her professional experience spans cellular communications, cable, GEO and LEO satellites, broadband, streaming media, artificial intelligence, and telecommunications networks. She has also produced market and financial studies examining emerging technologies and how they may influence industries and consumers. During this thought-provoking conversation, Rob and Carol explore how technological changes that once sounded like science fiction have increasingly become part of ordinary life. The discussion raises larger questions about digital transformation, communications, automation, artificial intelligence, connectivity, mobile technology, and how individuals and businesses can prepare for accelerating change. Carol's current work continues to focus on emerging technology, including AI, space communications, digital media, and the impact of technological disruption. Join Rob McConnell and Carol Ingley on The 'X' Zone Radio Show as they look beyond today's gadgets and ask what technology means for the future of humanity. Are we controlling the technological revolution—or is technology beginning to control the way we work, communicate, think, and live? And perhaps the biggest question of all: if the future is already here, are we actually ready for what comes next?

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Charity Becker, author of the dark paranormal novel Presence: Awakening, the first installment in her Presence series. Published in 2010, Awakening introduces readers to Mina Jewel, a woman whose childhood was shattered when she witnessed what she insists was a terrifying supernatural creature killing her abusive stepfather. The authorities don't believe her story, and Mina spends nine years undergoing psychiatric care while the people around her remain convinced that she herself was responsible. Determined to clear her name and discover what really happened, Mina begins searching for the mysterious being she believes saved her life. What follows takes her into a world filled with supernatural activity, terrifying revelations, near-death experiences, psychic phenomena, hidden forces, and secrets capable of changing everything she thought she understood about herself and reality. Presence: Awakening blends elements of horror, suspense, paranormal fiction, and dark fantasy into a story where distinguishing the impossible from the real becomes increasingly difficult. Charity Becker brings an intensely personal dimension to her fiction. She has described herself as a survivor of domestic violence and says she uses experiences from her past to create characters who face enormous obstacles yet find ways to grow beyond their pain. In addition to writing, Becker has worked professionally as an editor and is also an artist and musician. Her bibliography extends well beyond Awakening, with the Presence universe continuing through titles including Wolf Moon, Smoke and Fire, Into the Dark, August Heat, Caged, and Sorrow's Aria. Join Rob McConnell and Charity Becker on The 'X' Zone Radio Show as they venture into the shadowy world of Presence: Awakening and discuss the inspiration behind Mina Jewel, supernatural storytelling, monsters both human and paranormal, survival, fear, and the enduring fascination we have with things that lurk just beyond our understanding. Charity Becker and Presence – Awakening are also documented in The 'X' Zone guest archives.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Carole Whang Schutter, author and screenwriter, for a provocative examination of religious extremism, terrorism, fanaticism, and the frightening ability of charismatic leaders to persuade ordinary people to commit extraordinary acts of violence. Schutter's interest in the subject grew from her work on the historical drama September Dawn, which examines the Mountain Meadows Massacre of September 11, 1857, when more than 100 members of a wagon train were killed in Utah Territory. Schutter co-wrote the screenplay for the 2007 film September Dawn with director Christopher Cain. Starring Jon Voight, Trent Ford, Tamara Hope, and Terence Stamp, the film uses a fictional love story against the backdrop of the historical massacre. Its interpretation of the events proved highly controversial, with critics and historians debating both its historical accuracy and its attempt to draw parallels between nineteenth-century religious fanaticism and modern terrorism. In her conversation with Rob, Schutter considers a disturbing question: How do otherwise ordinary human beings become terrorists? She argues that the dangers are not confined to any single religion, nationality, culture, or period of history. Instead, she points toward prejudice, hatred, ignorance, fear, unquestioning obedience, and manipulation by fanatical leaders as forces capable of transforming communities and individuals. Her appearance in The 'X' Zone archives specifically addressed what lessons the Mountain Meadows tragedy might offer when trying to understand religious extremists in the modern world. Join Rob McConnell and Carole Whang Schutter on The 'X' Zone Radio Show for a challenging journey through history and human behaviour as they examine terrorism not simply as a political or military problem, but as a human one. What makes someone surrender independent thought to an extremist ideology? Can understanding atrocities of the past help prevent those of the future? And perhaps most importantly: when fanaticism begins replacing reason, will we recognize the warning signs before it is too late?

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Candace L. Talmadge, professional writer, author, and explorer of emotional and spiritual healing. Talmadge has been a professional writer since 1976, with a background that includes political and business journalism as well as fiction and nonfiction. Together with Jana L. Simons, she co-authored Hope Is in the Garden: Healing Resolution Through Unconditional Love, originally published in 1999. At the heart of Hope Is in the Garden is an alternative spiritual and emotional healing approach known as the Sunan method or Sunan storyhealing. Talmadge's work proposes that human beings should be understood not merely through the conscious mind and physical body but also through emotional and spiritual dimensions. The book explores how deeply held beliefs, emotions, judgments, and personal experiences may influence the patterns people repeatedly encounter in their lives. These ideas represent the authors' spiritual healing framework rather than established clinical psychological treatment. During this intriguing conversation, Rob and Candace explore unconditional love, consciousness, emotional healing, spirituality, past lives, personal transformation, and the relationship between mind, emotion, spirit, and what Talmadge describes as the human energy field. The book also discusses past-life resolution and the concept of releasing judgment as part of the healing process. Candace previously joined The 'X' Zone specifically to discuss Hope Is in the Garden and its approach to emotional and spiritual healing. Can unconditional love change the way we understand ourselves and the experiences that have shaped us? Can letting go of anger, judgment, and destructive emotional patterns open the door to a different future? Join Rob McConnell and Candace Talmadge on The 'X' Zone Radio Show for a thought-provoking journey into healing, consciousness, spirituality, past lives, and one author's search for what she believes may lie at the deepest roots of human transformation.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Dr. Caron B. Goode, author, counselor, psychotherapist, educator, and parenting expert whose work has explored the fascinating world of intuitive and highly sensitive children. Drawing on fifteen years in private psychotherapy practice and three decades of experience in education, personal empowerment, and therapy, Goode has devoted much of her career to helping parents better recognize and nurture the individual abilities of their children. Goode is the co-author, with Tara Paterson, of Raising Intuitive Children: Guide Your Children to Know and Trust Their Gifts. The book examines children described as unusually intuitive, empathic, sensitive, or spiritually aware and offers parents strategies for recognizing their children's strengths, improving communication, encouraging confidence, and creating an environment in which children feel safe discussing unusual experiences. It also addresses breathing techniques, family rituals, bonding, and different parenting approaches for different personalities. During this intriguing conversation, Rob and Caron explore what it actually means to call a child “intuitive.” Are some youngsters simply exceptionally observant and emotionally sensitive, or might certain children possess abilities that extend beyond our conventional understanding of perception? Goode's later book, Kids Who See Ghosts: How to Guide Them Through Fear, ventures even further into this territory, examining children who report ghosts, psychic impressions, and other unusual experiences. Importantly, her approach emphasizes helping frightened children feel heard and empowered regardless of whether the parent personally accepts a paranormal explanation. Join Rob McConnell and Dr. Caron B. Goode on The 'X' Zone Radio Show for a thought-provoking discussion about parenting, intuition, sensitivity, psychic experiences, childhood fears, spirituality, and the extraordinary inner worlds of children. Are today's so-called intuitive children genuinely demonstrating abilities we don't yet understand—or are we finally learning to pay closer attention to qualities in children that previous generations may have overlooked?

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Carole Brody Fleet, award-winning author, speaker, and recognized grief and life-adversity recovery expert, for an intimate and compassionate conversation about surviving one of life's most devastating experiences—the death of a spouse. Carole is the author of Happily Even After: A Guide to Getting Through (and Beyond) the Grief of Widowhood, winner of the 2013 Books for a Better Life Award, as well as the acclaimed Widows Wear Stilettos. Carole's understanding of widowhood comes from deeply personal experience. After losing her husband to ALS, she found herself facing the enormous challenge of grief while rebuilding her life and caring for her family. Discovering how few practical resources existed for widowed people helped inspire her advocacy and the creation of Widows Wear Stilettos, an organization established to provide support, education, information, and community to people coping with the loss of a spouse. In Happily Even After, Carole addresses the questions that can arise immediately following a spouse's death—and those that may emerge months or even years later. Drawing upon thousands of letters received from widowed people, she tackles subjects including grief, raising children after the death of a parent, returning to work, financial and legal adjustments, loneliness, relationships, dating, intimacy, remarriage, and rediscovering one's own identity. Her central message is not that grief should be rushed or forgotten, but that it is possible to carry love and memories forward while gradually rebuilding a meaningful life. Join Rob McConnell and Carole Brody Fleet on The 'X' Zone Radio Show for a heartfelt discussion about love, death, grief, courage, resilience, and what happens when the life you expected suddenly disappears. For anyone who has lost a spouse or partner—or who loves someone struggling with bereavement—this conversation offers understanding and the reassuring possibility that although life will never again be exactly the same, there can still be a “happily even after.”

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Bud “Buddy” Gilham, author of It’s a Buddy’s World, a warm, humorous, sometimes poignant collection of stories, essays, and observations drawn from real-life experiences. Originally growing from articles Bud published in magazines and newspapers, the book looks at those wonderfully human moments we all experience—from the funny and embarrassing to the deeply emotional—and reminds us that sometimes the best way to get through life is simply to keep smiling. Bud brings an unusually varied background to his writing. Having lived and worked on two continents, his life experiences include psychology, teaching, and paramedic work. That combination gives him plenty of material for looking at family, children, teenagers, grandchildren, aging, relationships, loss, and some of life's more serious struggles. His writing has been described as easygoing, humorous, straightforward, and filled with homespun wisdom—almost like sitting down for a conversation with a trusted friend or grandfather. During this entertaining and thoughtful conversation, Rob and Bud explore the experiences behind It’s a Buddy’s World, including family life, parenting, getting older, embarrassing moments, love, loss, and the strange situations ordinary people somehow manage to find themselves in. Some stories are designed to make readers laugh at themselves, while others venture into considerably more serious territory involving loneliness, grief, and the emotional challenges that can accompany life's unexpected turns. This is an episode about something everyone listening has in common: being human. We make mistakes, say the wrong things, embarrass ourselves, raise families, lose people we love, wonder what might have been—and somehow keep moving forward. Join Rob McConnell and Bud Gilham on The ‘X’ Zone Radio Show for a conversation filled with humor, heart, reflection, and the homespun philosophy of It’s a Buddy’s World. Bud Gilham and this title also appear in The ‘X’ Zone guest archives.
