Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Barbara and Paul Gerhardt, husband-and-wife authors of Choice Matters, for a wide-ranging discussion about some of the most contentious social and political questions facing American society. Their appearance on The 'X' Zone was originally presented under the title “From Abortion Rights to Illegal Immigration,” reflecting a conversation built around personal liberty, government authority, individual responsibility and how societies decide which choices should remain with the individual and which should be regulated by law. At the centre of their discussion is Choice Matters, a book in which the Gerhardts argue that freedom and the ability to make meaningful choices are closely connected. Rather than concentrating on a single political controversy, the book contains 25 chapters examining subjects including women's reproductive issues, definitions of human life, end-of-life decisions, religion and democracy, population, employment, sex education, illegal drugs, tobacco, alcohol, gambling, marijuana, gun control, same-sex marriage, litigation, political leadership, and war and peace. The authors present their own proposed solutions while inviting readers to consider and debate them. During this X Zone conversation, Rob, Barbara and Paul examine issues on which Americans have often been deeply divided, including abortion rights and immigration. Rather than treating these questions as simple slogans, the discussion provides an opportunity to examine the underlying tensions between individual freedom and collective responsibility, personal morality and public law, and the competing rights and interests involved when government establishes public policy. The Gerhardts' work is explicitly presented as an effort to stimulate discussion about difficult social questions rather than merely avoid controversial subjects. Join Rob McConnell, Barbara Gerhardt and Paul Gerhardt on The 'X' Zone Radio Show for a conversation about choice, freedom, responsibility and the difficult compromises inherent in democratic government. How much freedom should individuals have over decisions affecting their own lives? When does society have a legitimate interest in restricting those choices? And when people fundamentally disagree about abortion, immigration, guns, marriage, drugs, religion or war, how can a democratic society debate those disagreements while protecting both individual rights and the rule of law? Barbara and Paul are also documented separately in The 'X' Zone guest archives under “The Choice.”
