Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Thomas E. Pierce, author of The Last Rose: A True Celebration of Eternal Life, for a profoundly moving story about love, devastating loss, grief and the strength to continue living after unimaginable tragedy. On March 6, 2004, Thomas boarded the Lady D water taxi in Baltimore's Inner Harbor with his wife, JoAnn, and daughter, Lisa. A violent gust of wind struck the vessel, causing it to capsize and throw its 25 passengers into the frigid water. Five people died—including both JoAnn and Lisa. Thomas survived by clinging to the overturned vessel while waiting to be rescued. His book recounts the horrifying events of that day, including a letter written to Lisa by one of the reservists involved in her rescue. Yet Pierce emphasized that The Last Rose was never intended simply to be a book about tragedy. Instead, it became his testimony to what he regarded as the enduring power of love and to the experiences and signs that helped him cope with his grief and move forward with his life. Pierce, who spent his professional life as a computer programmer and consultant, never originally planned to become an author. He later became co-owner of The Legacy, a restaurant dedicated to the memory of his wife and daughter, and increasingly shared his story with others. The Last Rose was published in 2007 and became a finalist in the Spirituality: Inspirational category of the USA Best Books 2007 Awards. Thomas continued speaking about the book and the lives of JoAnn and Lisa until his own death in 2019.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Thomas Lyons, author of Modern Day Mystic: A Psychic & Spiritual Journey Through a Not Quite Ordinary Life, for an exploration of mystical experiences, psychic phenomena, spirituality and some of the extraordinary events Lyons says have shaped his understanding of reality. Thomas's appearance is documented in The 'X' Zone guest archives under the title “Modern Day Mystic.” Published in 2005, Modern Day Mystic is a 300-page collection of stories and personal experiences dealing with questions that have fascinated paranormal researchers and spiritual seekers for generations. Lyons examines such subjects as prophetic dreams, communication with spirits, enlightenment, psychic phenomena, spoon bending and what he describes as developing “healing hands.” The book presents hundreds of accounts involving mystical and unusual experiences. For Lyons, being a mystic does not necessarily mean withdrawing from contemporary society. He describes a mystic as someone whose existence involves an immersion in what he calls the “Divine Mysteries of Life.” His approach attempts to reconcile ancient mystical concepts with modern life while asking whether extraordinary personal experiences might reveal aspects of consciousness that we do not yet fully understand. Claims involving psychic abilities, spirit communication, psychokinesis or supernatural healing, however, remain scientifically unestablished and should be distinguished from documented medical or physical phenomena.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Angela Artemis, writer, author, intuition teacher, self-described clairvoyant and spiritual medium. Angela is the founder of Powered by Intuition and author of The Intuition Principle: How to Attract the Life You Dream Of. Interestingly, her spiritual work developed alongside a very conventional professional career: she spent more than two decades working in financial planning, private banking and real-estate finance. Contemporary listings for her original X Zone appearance likewise described her as a writer, clairvoyant and spiritual medium from the New York area. Angela says her unusual experiences began during childhood. She recalls receiving her first Tarot cards and giving readings at age 11, becoming interested in astrology at 12, experiencing precognitive dreams, hearing what she interpreted as guiding voices, and having encounters she believed involved spirits. She says that during psychic and medical-intuition training in adulthood, an instructor suggested that some of what she was experiencing represented communication with deceased individuals, leading Angela to identify herself as a medium. These experiences represent Angela's personal interpretation of events rather than scientifically established evidence of paranormal communication. Angela's work also focuses heavily on intuition. In The Intuition Principle, she presents exercises involving meditation, journaling, dream analysis and attention to intuitive impressions as tools for greater self-awareness and decision-making. Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Adam Gorightly, author, researcher and chronicler of conspiracy culture who proudly describes himself as a “crackpot historian.” For decades, Gorightly has immersed himself in the stranger corners of American counterculture, investigating subjects involving Charles Manson, the JFK assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald, Kerry Thornley, Discordianism, UFOs, mind-control claims and conspiracy mythology. His articles have appeared in underground magazines, alternative publications and conspiracy-oriented outlets, giving him a distinctive perspective on how unusual ideas develop and become part of popular culture. Among Gorightly's best-known books is The Shadow Over Santa Susana: Black Magic, Mind Control and the Manson Family Mythos, an exploration of Charles Manson and the cultural environment surrounding the Tate-LaBianca murders. His work ventures beyond the conventional Manson narrative into connections and alleged connections involving Hollywood's underground, occultism, Scientology, the Process Church, psychedelic drugs and MK-ULTRA. Some of these connections remain disputed or speculative, making the distinction between documented history, allegation and conspiracy theory particularly important. Gorightly is also the author of The Prankster and the Conspiracy, examining Kerry Thornley, who served with Lee Harvey Oswald in the Marines and later became an important figure in Discordianism. Gorightly subsequently compiled Historia Discordia: The Origins of the Discordian Society and has written extensively about UFO culture, including Saucers, Spooks and Kooks: UFO Disinformation in the Age of Aquarius. His specialty is not merely collecting conspiracy theories but examining the unusual people, documents, rumours, hoaxes and countercultural movements from which those stories emerged. Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Amirah Hall, known as “The SoulMystic,” an intuitive counselor, spiritual teacher, author and practitioner of what she describes as energy healing. For decades, Amirah has explored metaphysical and spiritual traditions while teaching programs involving intuition, psychic development, meditation and personal transformation. Join Rob McConnell for one of the most controversial interviews ever featured on The 'X' Zone Radio Show as he speaks with Malcolm J. Brenner, an American writer, journalist and photographer who became internationally known for his claim that, as a young man in the early 1970s, he developed a sexual relationship with a captive female bottlenose dolphin named Dolly at the now-defunct Floridaland attraction in Sarasota County, Florida. Brenner later transformed his account into the semi-autobiographical novel Wet Goddess: Recollections of a Dolphin Lover. Brenner maintains that the relationship developed while he was working around dolphins and that Dolly actively sought his attention. He has subsequently described the experience as an emotional interspecies relationship rather than simply a sexual encounter. His interpretation is highly controversial, particularly because a non-human animal cannot provide informed human-style consent and because sexual activity between humans and animals raises serious ethical, animal-welfare and legal issues. Florida subsequently enacted legislation prohibiting sexual activity with animals in 2011. Brenner says he eventually wrote Wet Goddess because he wanted people to consider dolphin intelligence, self-awareness, emotional complexity and the ethics of keeping highly intelligent marine mammals in captivity. On his own website, he explicitly states that he did not write the book to promote bestiality or zoophilia, but rather to communicate what he believes his experience taught him about dolphins. Those broader questions concerning dolphin cognition and animal welfare can be examined independently from Brenner's controversial interpretation of his personal relationship with Dolly.
