It's not a difficult thing to make a cheeseburger but I just wanted to share how I did it.

This wasn't the most elaborate burger, it didn't have the essential ingredients of an Australian burger which included slices of beetroot and a ring of pineapple plus a fried egg and some bacon.

My daughters and I have been planning an overseas holiday for about a year. Originally we were going to Florida in the middle of December as part of a gymnastics event. Unfortunately that fell through. As an alternative we agreed on Hong Kong. There are a lot of good reasons for Hong Kong. Food. Hong Kong Disney. Food. Ocean Park. Food. No jet lag because it's in AWST. Food. It's only an eight hour flight from Brisbane as opposed to more than double that to Florida. Food. Shopping at markets. Food. Photography. Food. Mostly importantly, I'd have much more time with my daughters than if we all went as part of a large gymnastic team event. Did I mention food?

A lot of my friends in university ate a lot of instant noodles instead of proper meals. I've seen documentaries where instant noodles form the basis of a whole cuisine for some people. I like them but I don't love them. That said, I always have some in the shelf of shame because they're cheap and I couldn't be bothered buying fancy noodles.

Today is day two of our Hawaiian holiday adventure and we marked it with our first experience of Jack in the Box. We drove up the east coast of Oahu to get to our condominium accommodation in Turtle Bay.

I was reminded by a friend today that Jack in the box is best known to microbiologists because of an outbreak of Escherichia coli infection caused by the O157:H7 strain in 1993 which infected 732 people. I'll let you know if I feel crook.

I had a piece of salmon and some streaky bacon that needed eating

I made mistake tonight. I started with my piece of Sunday salmon and thought I'd dust it with some flour. Then I remembered the bacon I needed to eat. I chucked that into the bag with the salmon and flour and ended up with a ghostly white piece of salmon and dusty streaky bacon. At that point I should have changed my mind from baking and gone to frying in a little oil with a lid on the frying pan to moisten the Sunday salmon. Instead I went with my first thought and didn't think it through. A bad mistake.

It’s been cold in Canberra the last few nights. It’s the middle of summer and the mornings have been <10 °C (<50 °F). I've heard that Thredbo (~200 km SWS) has been having 0 °C (32 °F) mornings. I've been trying to enjoy summer salads for dinner but my mind is playing tricks on me. A night out for a hot meal is in order...at Eightysix in Braddon.
