Welcome to another episode of Keep'n it 9450: Codename WBB, the women's basketball podcast hosted by Daniel Artest and Kevin "Kdot" Lewis. In this episode, we're recapping the exciting opening day of the 2023 WNBA season. It was a night full of action and surprises, so let's dive right into the highlights. The evening started with a bang as the Washington Mystics dominated the New York Liberty, who struggled to find their rhythm as a superteam. The Mystics' elite defense stifled the Liberty's offense, resulting in an 80-64 victory for Washington. Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, key additions to the Liberty, had a tough night, while Courtney Vandersloot's turnovers overshadowed her assists. In other early games, the Connecticut Sun showcased their strength against the Indiana Fever, holding off a comeback attempt to secure a 70-61 win. Alyssa Thomas proved to be a force on both ends of the court, putting up impressive numbers with 18 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks. On the Fever's side, Aliyah Boston made her highly anticipated debut, displaying her skills with 15 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. The Chicago Sky took advantage of a lackluster performance from the Minnesota Lynx, sealing a 77-66 victory. Kahleah Copper led the way for the Sky with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The Lynx struggled with turnovers throughout the game, coughing up the ball 20 times, ultimately costing them the win. The night concluded with the return of Brittney Griner for the Phoenix Mercury, who faced off against the Los Angeles Sparks. After missing the entire 2022 season, Griner showcased her talent and made an immediate impact. In her first game back, she scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds, and recorded four blocks. However, her efforts weren't enough as the Mercury fell to the Sparks with a final score of 94-71. Overall, it was an intriguing opening night, with Brittney Griner making a triumphant return, Zia Cooke impressing in her debut for the Sparks, and the Mystics showcasing their dominant defense against the struggling Liberty.
