  • The Bunker Podcast 146: Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff
I could not have been more thrilled when @JasperWolff and @maarten_mittendorff, residents of Amsterdam's legendary De School, asked Derek Plaslaiko and I to play their night. One of their tracks "Trica" had been in constant rotation for me since its release but I knew little else about them. Both Derek and I were completely blown away by the opening set they played at De School; we could not have asked for a better intro to perfectly set the stage for what turned out to be one of our favorite nights all year. I immediately asked them to record a podcast for The Bunker and they responded with this special mix that features unreleased goodies from their studio and upcoming releases on their @indigoaera imprint. - Bryan Kasenic

  • Gunnar Haslam - Second Version
The latest transmission from the world of Gunnar Haslam, Kalaatsakia wildly sprawls across the intersections of techno and more abstract sounds to take us on a wide-ranging journey from the subterranean to the coastal, from blown-out dub tones through fractured rhythms. An incredible work that is not easy to pigeonhole, Kalaatsakia is a full length album that navigates and sketches landscapes where new languages are created from old, dead ones to emerge as the lingua franca of interconnected immersive zones.
Haslam is an avid home listener of dub, dancehall and calypso, and that influence is quickly felt as Kalaatsakia launches with a tight electro snap and dubwise crash. Kalaatsakia advances and retreats seasonally, tightening up for the floor with the chrome-plated “Broadcast” and “Kjolle” while splintering apart on “Kalapuyan” and “nxbound”. Its constituent parts are often left to collapse in on themselves, smearing themes into residual trails. As the narrative of the album disintegrates and unfolds into more deconstructed territory, it stretches out even further with a striking skittering mental tease, settling into burbling sub-audible vocals and resonant spaces that all form a part of Haslam's self-created subconscious language.

  • The Bunker Podcast 145: Placid
Since 1990 Placid has been spinning the platters that matter, legendary for his sets of purest 303-drenched acid and his reputation as 'The DJ's DJ'. Resident on Dj International radio and at London's monthly acid house night I Love Acid, Placid's gigging biography has taken him to Detroit, New York, Berlin, France, Spain and Holland as well as Glastonbury and BLOC music festivals. Reputed to be owner of one of the world's most encompassing collections of Acid House, Placid is a walking acid-house encyclopaedia who can always be trusted to dig deep into his records crate to bring you a pure vinyl set of the absolute best of Acid House, Detroit Techno, Retro Electro and Chicago House.
He tells us that this mix, recorded at home, is more for the head than the feet...but we found our feet moving nonetheless.

  • Gunnar Haslam - Scale No Flam (The Bunker New York 023) Preview Clips
Like many of us, Brooklyn-based producer Gunnar Haslam has long been drawn to acid. Following two releases on The Bunker New York alongside Tin Man as a part of their improvisational Romans project, Gunnar returns with “Scale No Flam”, his first 12” single for the label. Scale No Flam is both a love letter and a demonstration of why he can’t stop getting lost in the sound. According to Gunnar, “acid is just one of those things that creeps into your life and consumes everything around you - a psychedelic and textural approach to music that is simultaneously intense and smooth.” While acid has come to be defined by the Roland 808 and the 303, the hardware alone can’t define the feeling, and Gunnar believes “You don't need a 303 to make acid, you just need an open ear and an open mind.”
After getting Mike Servito, Justin Cudmore, Derek Plaslaiko, and Bryan Kasenic all running to the booth to see what the fuck was playing at various times when Gunnar was dropping the unreleased “Scale No Flam” in his DJ sets throughout 2016, we had no choice but to press it to vinyl. Gunnar tells us he was playing around with trying to replicate the bass line of Heaven 17’s 1982 classic ‘Let Me Go’ when “things kinda mutated.” The A side is completely Gunnar’s own with a dominating acid line providing the backbone to a flangey work-out that is simultaneously totally crazy and totally logical. On the B side, fellow Brooklynites and co-members of the Hot Mix DJ crew, Mike Servito and Justin Cudmore add their perspective with a remix that draws out the hidden angular funk.
