  • The Bunker on Red Bull Radio: Paxahau 07/20/2017
    @paxahau
    @chuck_flask
    @dan-bain
    Chuck Flask and Dan Bain of the crew behind Movement join us in Detroit to discuss their year-round work and play the sound of their events.
    Fans of electronic music all over the world will likely recognize the name Paxahau – since 2006, they’ve been the force behind Detroit’s Movement festival, one of the most revered large-scale events in dance music. What non-Detroiters might not realize is that Movement is but one weekend for the crew, who keep a steady stream of top-tier house and techno artists flowing through the city all year. As part of his residency at our Detroit studio this summer, The Bunker’s Bryan Kasenic wanted to showcase that other side of Paxahau, so he invited two of their resident DJs to drop in, play some tunes and discuss their wider world. First up is Dan Bain, a longtime Paxahau DJ currently based in Houston. Closing out the show is Chuck Flask, who as Paxahau’s talent buyer helps shape Movement’s closely watched lineups each year.

  • The Bunker on Red Bull Radio: Girls Gone Vinyl 06/01/2017
    Maggie Derthick, Superdre and Rebecca Goldberg of the crew shedding light on women in dance music talk shop and spin records from Detroit.
    Detroit’s Maggie Derthick started Girls Gone Vinyl in the mid-2000s in reaction to the yawning gap between the number of men and women booked to play major electronic music festivals. The project began as a party around Detroit’s Movement festival, but given that the issue was hardly endemic to one event or scene, it soon grew into something larger. Derthick linked up with film producer Jenny “Lafemme” Feterovich to turn Girls Gone Vinyl into a documentary shedding light on woman DJs and the consequences of the industry’s gender gap. Following a Kickstarter campaign, the film is gearing up for an initial release as a series of short online episodes. From our Detroit studio, The Bunker’s Bryan Kasenic sits down with Derthick and Feterovich to discuss the film and the battle to get more women on lineups and behind the decks. The episode is bookended by DJ sets from two Detroit DJs involved in the project: SuperDre and Rebecca Goldberg.

  • The Bunker Podcast 155: BMG
    On Saturday December 1, 2007, a snowy night in Detroit, @Ithqdetroit thew a party called No Way Back. We had no idea how people would react, we just felt the scene needed this. The space was unfinished, and as the snow storm outside escalated the heat inside from the crowd began to melt the snow on the raw roof, making in literally rain on the dance floor. The party didn't end until around 5PM.

  • Atom™ - Acidsexmagic
    Uwe Schmidt has long been recognized as one of electronic music’s most respected and versatile artists. A man of many talents, projects and identities including Atom Heart and Señor Coconut, Uwe’s playfully ironic and acid-tinged Atom™ moniker is perhaps the identity that most speaks to the New York dancefloors where The Bunker makes its home. Several Atom™ releases are much-loved Bunker classics and with the Future Nights 12” Uwe offers a heady experiment in what happens when a track takes you so far inside your own head that you’re in danger of losing your way back.
    All three tracks have been getting heavy pre-release workouts in Brooklyn courtesy of The Bunker residents. The A side is comprised of two fuzzy vocal techno tracks that are as fun to listen to as they will be to subject to some heavy tweaking in the hands of a capable DJ. The B side, “Chemistry” is particularly versatile and crazy-making with elements of darker techno stirred into a disorientingly stereophonic maelstrom that’s guaranteed to cause a dancefloor to lose its moorings until the only thing keeping reality from splintering is the track’s dry academic vocal reassuring us that it’s all just chemistry.

  • J.F. Burma - Nomadic EP (The Bunker New York 026) CLIPS
    J. F. Burma is a new analog synth project of Jeremy Berman, a longtime friend of The Bunker, who we met via the forums of I-F’s Cybernetic Broadcasting System internet radio station in the early 2000’s. While living in Brooklyn, Jeremy spent many hours each week searching for undiscovered gems among the piles of records (and sometimes rat skeletons) at notorious Greenpoint crate-digging spot The Thing. Inspired and educated by the music he was finding, he purchased his first modular and started building synthesizers and modules in spite of his lack of training in electrical engineering. Currently, about half of his current Eurorack rig has been DIY’ed via trial and error.
    Jeremy put out his first record entitled B.O.Y. on Shaddock Records in 2013, under the name Factory Aire. This debut 12” included remixes from DJ Stingray and Atom™ and was enthusiastically received by critics, DJs and collectors. After a move to Los Angeles and the birth of his daughter, music took a bit of a back seat and The Bunker New York is proud to release the Nomadic EP, his first record produced under the influence of a toddler. All three tracks have a very live feel as Jeremy draws most of his inspiration from interacting with music machines during late night jam sessions: “When I’m jamming out I tend to gravitate towards trippier vibes, which is just a reflection of my personal affinity for acid and psychedelic music” he tells us. The three tracks that comprise the Nomadic EP are the precisely perfect mystical outsider jams for those sunrises when a bit of human-modulated machine music is exactly what’s needed.

  • The Bunker Podcast 151: Steffen Bennemann
    @Steffenbennemann says: "I am not able to record a techno mix without an actual club/open air situation around me. It's impossible for me to get into a techno mood when I'm in the studio and by myself. So this is a live recording - from a place where the booth feels as comfortable as my own bed. and that says a lot cause i like nothing more than sleeping :)"
