  • The Bunker Podcast 168: Løt.te
@lottesounds has released two EPs on The Bunker New York label, and recently contributed a killer track to our 15 Years of The Bunker compilation. He will be joining us on Saturday, April 28th at The Bunker NY x No Sleep Novi Sad at Good Room (full info and tickets: http://thebunkerny.com/events/2018-04-28-the-bunker-x-no-sleep-novi-sad).
Løt.te tells us: "Topically, the mix is inspired by the Amazon rainforest and the ‘uncontacted’ peoples who still inhabit it. Technically, I was trying to merge influences from filmmaking with the patterns and techniques of a DJ mix. So you’ll hear a lot of ‘cuts’ in addition to smooth transitions between tracks, as well as manipulations and layering of audio to create a sense of environment, space and time. My goal was to explore new ways of making a DJ mix, and to create an evocative and transportive experience for the listener.

  • Wata Igarashi "Question and Answer" EP (The Bunker New York 029)CLIPS
We are excited to share @Wata Igarashi’s mind-bending “Question and Answer EP”, his second release on The Bunker New York. We’ve been playing all four tracks at our parties for a while, watching people lose their minds on the dance floor and look at their friends with that “what is this?!” expression on their faces. These reactions are not surprising considering that Igarashi is a lifelong musician and a professional sound designer by trade. Through decades of experience composing music he has developed a sophisticated and nuanced approach to production that allows him to evoke powerful moods and emotions. In recent years he has been applying his production skills to great effect, developing a distinctive brand of psychedelic techno that has been released on labels including Midgar, Semantica and Time to Express. Describing his creative development, Igarashi tells us: “the more I produce and play, the more I discover. I keep finding different aspects or nuances of making and performing techno music. This process of learning and constantly going deeper is very exciting for me, it is unlike anything else I have experienced before. I am appreciative of the opportunities I have been getting and I just want to pursue them as far as I can, it is deeply motivating doing something I love with people I respect.”
A chance encounter at Berghain in February of 2015 connected Wata with Bryan Kasenic, founder of The Bunker New York, who already knew and loved his music. As a result of this meeting, The Bunker released a very well received podcast from Wata later that year, which was followed by Igarashi’s “Mood of the Machines EP” in 2016. The relationship has further deepened through working together on this follow up record and Wata making his North American debut as a DJ at The Bunker in September of 2017. According to Igarashi, the “Question and Answer EP” is “about communication and connections, so it makes sense for it to be on The Bunker NY, a label that features so many friends and artists that inspire me. My relationship with Bryan has been an important and rewarding one for me, and I am really happy to be working with him again on this record.” These rewards quickly become obvious on a dance floor with unfurling infinite arpeggiations working themselves out with the inexorable driving force that can be found in truly great techno. The EP opens with tense and driving “Outburst”, which is complemented by the slow-burning “Train of Thought”. The B side features the title track, a beautifully unfolding number geared for generating powerful moments of release on the dancefloor. The EP finishes in style with the downtempo vibes of ‘Broken Telephone’. Versatile enough to be dropped during peaks or at other times, this new EP from Igarashi boasts 4 equally kaleidoscopic cuts that will surely stand out in a set.

  • The Bunker Podcast 167: Kangding Ray
There are few musicians who manage to explore the convergence between techno and experimental as successfully as David Letellier. Known as @kangding-ray, he has been producing for almost a decade, releasing his music exclusively on Raster-Noton and Stroboscopic Artefacts. The aesthetic domains of these two labels epitomizes Kangding Ray’s complex sound—it’s an aesthetic that tests boundaries, evolving tirelessly in its exploration of texture, rhythm, and sound design. Letellier’s foundations in rock and musique concrete give his music a vitality and uniqueness that has won fans the world over, from discerning avant-garde–electronica listeners, all the way to devoted clubbers.
This set is a partial recording of a DJ set KR made last year in a club. Kangding Ray has long been a favorite at The Bunker and we're looking forward to having him join us at The Bunker at Good Room here in Brooklyn on April 28, 2018. • Antemeridian - "Ante Meridiem" EP (The Bunker New York 028) CLIPS
When we started The Bunker New York label in 2014 there was a short list of artists whose music we knew that we wanted to get out into the world. Lori Napoleon, aka @antenes, was high up on that list, although at the time the Brooklyn-based Chicago native had yet to release her recorded music at all. Five years on, after acclaimed records on L.I.E.S. and Silent Season, residencies at Issue Project Room and Bell Labs plus a busy global touring schedule as both a DJ and live performer, we are proud and excited to present Lori’s Ante Meridiem EP under her Antemeridian production moniker. She tells us that the Antemeridian project is a special outlet for her more melodic synthesizer compositions and the name Antemeridian refers to “morning light and the meridian lines of the planet, the view you would have from above if you were already in the sky/space/seeing the atmosphere also from a great distance.”
With this EP, Antemeridian has created nothing less than a masterwork of synthesis comprising unique soundscapes unbelievably detailed and crisp. We asked Lori to tell us a bit about her production techniques, which include home-built machines from unorthodox source materials including vintage switchboards and telecommunications equipment. She actually built her first synthesizer out of an antique telephone switchboard we donated to her from The Bunker HQ! “I use a combination of synths and controllers/sequencers that I’ve made along with commercially available/ bought or modded analog synths and field recordings that have gone through a number of effects chains. There may be a crackling sound that emerged from the modular which made me think about a flame sparking and burning out, recalling a very organic process in nature - but in a composition it’s a drum element. Perhaps the sense of detail comes from how I work on finding sounds before arranging them in a track so when I find one with little nuances and textures, then I'll be inspired to compose with it. Visceral sounds are very important to me, and sounds that you may not instantly identify with this or that synth model – which is why I like the idea of designing my own palette for portions of tracks.”

“After nearly 15 years of operation, The Bunker has mastered the art of curating lineups that strike a balance between the challenging and the danceable. Also, their persistent focus on showcasing locally-bred artists makes every party feel like a reunion. In a clubbing landscape crowded with nights that either recycle old ideas or try too hard to do something new, The Bunker is that rare event that gets it just right.” - Resident Advisor
In January of 2003, The Bunker started as a weekly party at subTonic in the Lower East Side of New York, sometimes attracting mere dozens of people every Friday for the first year. Fifteen years later it’s grown beyond an established party to encompass a record label, long-running podcast series, radio show, North American booking agency, and is now an internationally respected techno institution. In the past few years, we’ve watched our resident DJs go from local heroes to busy touring artists and have presented The Bunker parties around the world in places we never thought that we’d go to much less play.
To celebrate our 15 years of existence, we present this 26 track, 3+ hour compilation of artists from The Bunker NY label, our agency roster, and a few new members of the family. Most of these artists you should already know, but we’re very proud to present the debut productions from rrao, Abby Echiverri, Coward, and LDY OSC., all of whom have been involved in The Bunker community for years.
Due to the time-consuming nature of vinyl pressing and distribution, we wanted to experiment with the immediacy of a digital-only release to provide an extremely fresh example of where The Bunker family of artists are at right now. As with all releases on The Bunker New York, everything has been mastered with loving care by Neel at Enisslab in Rome. For those who love objects to go with their digital music purchases, we are offering a very limited edition of this release exclusively on The Bunker New York Bandcamp that includes a Common Name-designed deluxe boxed USB with all the tracks, a long sleeve t-shirt only available as part of this release package, stickers, and an immediate lossless download on release day. The standard digital release will be available on our Bandcamp and everywhere else you can buy music online.
