  • We Need More Than a Band-Aid

Never feeling black enough or white enough is a complicated existence. When Emily Collins was younger, calling her the “whitest black girl” you knew was taken as a compliment. Growing up in a town with very little diversity, she surrounded herself with white friends and admits that she even shied away from black people. But, what began as her identity crisis transformed her into a bridge between two worlds.

She was kind enough to open her big beautiful soul to me and I am thankful for her honesty and graciousness. We get into everything from being the default Scary Spice, to the larger social and political injustices happening right now. Despite the fact that Band-Aids are finally making a shade of bandage that matches her skin tone (100 years after they were invented) racial equality is still very far in the distance. We have some serious work to do. And by we, I mean white people.
