  • It's Getting Worse in Hong Kong (Transitional Justice)

Prosecutions, Imprisonment and Exile.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guest is Michael Davis.

This episode covers the prosecutions under both the National Security Law (NSL) and the existing public order laws of Hong Kong, with the reality that nearly all the pan-democratic forces in Hong Kong have been locked up or forced in exile, with much more of the former than the latter.

On top of that, nearly all the NGOs that stood for human rights and the rule of law have been intimidated into disbanding with ongoing investigations threatening further prosecutions of their members who are not already in jail. Add to that the intimidation of the courts and the bar and we can conclude that the mainland system is being imposed on Hong Kong.

Transitional Justice usually considers transitions away from authoritarianism, but the Hong Kong case is transitional justice in reverse, which perhaps we can call transitional injustice.

  • National Security: the Washington Problem (Figments: On Reality)

Washington DC is the Heart of the Problem.  The host for this show is Dan 'Fig' Leaf.

The failed 20-year war in Afghanistan is emblematic of repeated U.S. national security failures? What is the problem? Host, Lt Gen (Ret) Dan "Fig" Leaf gives his hypothesis in this episode. He cites the lack of diversity - not of gender or race, but of thought. He blames this on the DC-centric, politically motivated security community. He also cites blurred lines of responsibility and authority, the over-emphasis on playing to public opinion exacerbated by the information age and social media, oversight failures, and unjustified confidence despite repeated failure. His discussion is non-political (as always), and recommends measures that can be taken to improve U.S. performance in national security matters.
