  • Remembering 9/11 (America Finding its Way)

Where Were You and How Did it Affect You.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guest is Tim Apicella.

9/11 was the darkest day in American history, a brutal terrorist attack that killed thousands of people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.  It somehow affected and connected everyone in the country, and  the world.  How did you find out what was happening.  How did you react.  How did it affect you emotionally.  Did you know anyone who died that day.  There have been many shows and articles about what happened.  How have you reacted to them.

What are your recollections that day, and how does it affect you now.  How has it changed your life and view of the world since then,  the lives of the people around you and your community and our country.  Could this happen again.  How concerned are you that terrorists could attack our country again, and people you know now, 20 years later, in New York, Washington and/or elsewhere, by hijacked aircraft or otherwise.

We have many threats to deal with these days, in public health and in the health of our democracy.  Do you feel there is a connection between our current problems and the impact of what happened on 9/11.

  • The Vacant Homes Tax (Talking Tax)

Can this Even be Enforced.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guest is Tom Yamachika.

Recently, the Honolulu City Council has taken up the idea of imposing a different tax rate for residences that are vacant.
The idea is contained in Bill 76 (2020), a bill that started off last year, was referred to the Council Budget Committee, and was postponed by the committee in November 2020 after a couple of public hearings with only a couple of members of the public weighing in.
Now, KHON2 is reporting that there is new momentum for the bill following some discussion by the city’s Real Property Tax Advisory Commission.  “The idea is to get folks who have vacant homes to rent them out, or to sell them, hopefully to other local people,” Honolulu City Council chair Tommy Waters is quoted as saying.
The contemplated tax would add between 1% and 7%, in other words, an increase of up to 2000%.
But how do you prove that a home is vacant, or, if you're accused of having a vacant home, how do you prove that you live in it?

  • Major Hawaii Redistricting Update (Community Matters)

Why it Matters to all of us.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guest is Sandy Ma.

The State and Counties of Hawaii will draw new voting district maps this year -- and we need to make sure they are fair and representative for everyone in the state and counties.

Right now, the Hawaii State, Honolulu County, and Hawaii County redistricting commissions are preparing to draw voting districts that will represent us for the next decade.

We need these mapmakers to be as transparent as possible about this process -- and we need them to prioritize hearing from communities who have been historically left out of the redistricting process.

These maps will determine who we can elect to represent us at the federal, state, and county levels and what resources our communities receive for the next ten years. That’s why it’s so important that these maps give all of us a fair say.
