  • Corruption in Paradise (Hawaii Together)

Government Watchdogs Look the Other Way.  The host for this show is Keli'i Akina.  The guest is Randy Roth.

Too many government watchdog entities appear to have been willfully ignoring, or even tacitly approving, some of Hawaii’s most egregious corruption scandals, according to Randy Roth, law professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law.

Those include Honolulu Police Commission, the state and county ethics commissions, the state commissions of judicial conduct and judicial selection, and the state Office of Disciplinary Counsel.

On today’s episode of Hawaii Together, host Keli‘i Akina, president and CEO of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, talks with Roth about why such watchdogs have been paper tigers in the face of corruption all around them.

  • Open Source Information at the ICC (Transitional Justice)

Accountability in the Digital Age.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guest is Silvia Ottinetti.

With the development of information and communication technology, new investigative techniques and types of evidence have emerged, which may lead to more efficient, less resource-intensive investigations. This could help the ICC overcome challenges such as a lack of state support, security concerns, and capacity. This growing reliance on open source material in international criminal justice, however, should not be viewed as a panacea for the Court's shortcomings. The Prosecutor faces various challenges while conducting open source investigations, prompting increased collaboration with NGOs.

  • We Can't Legislate Renewables as Imagined (Perspectives on Energy)

Reliance on Renewables and Reliability.  The host for this show is Guillermo Sabatier.

Go to HSI.com for more information

As we have seen energy concerns play out this week, it is becoming painfully evident that a shift towards 100% renewables cannot happen as legislated by wishful thinkers.  California and parts of the western United States have been dealing with severe drought, heat waves and now constraints impacting their ability to meet their peak energy demands.  As this same state passed legislation to exclude internal combustion vehicles from their roads by 2035, they also urgently asked electric vehicle owners to delay charging them due to the utility concerns with supplying that demand.  Examples like these, though painful, can prove quite useful to fine tune the approach to better leverage renewable resources while balancing that with a diversified energy mix.

  • Should we be Less Concerned About Civil War (History is Here to Help)

How Things Have Changed Since January 6th.  The hosts for this show are Jay Fidell and Peter Hoffenberg.  The guest is Jean Rosenfeld.

Stirred by an opinion piece by Thomas Ricks in the Washington Post, our panel examines how the possibility of civil war in the country has changed, the evolution and threat of militia and terrorist groups over the past year, and the comments of Lindsey Graham and other Trump acolytes on the possibility of violence, may make us less concerned about a full fledged civil war in the country but nevertheless still concerned about the decline of our democracy and public safety.
