The post-Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving era has not been kind to the Nets. For what it's worth, I think they made out really nicely in their respective trades. They now have a surplus of draft equity that could be enough to acquire an All-Star. But will one become available to them? And what kind would they need to really elevate this roster to title
contention? I'm skeptical they'll be able to transform this roster to where they want it to be anytime soon. They might be better off negotiating a trade with the Rockets that allows them to get control of their draft picks back so they can take a step back and enter a rebuild. They might be able to get back to relevance faster that way with some young players they can build a future with.

June 14, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 15: Houston Rockets
Is it crazy to think that the Rockets are close to being a contender?
They made a huge step forward last season after bringing in Fred
VanVleet and Dillon Brooks and hiring Ime Udoka. They also saw
breakthrough seasons from players like Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green,
both of whom are eligible for contract extensions this summer. But they
have the draft equity and young players to make an aggressive offer for
an All-Star-level player. And if they can't get anybody now, they could
potentially have max cap space in 2025. They're well-positioned over the
next two years to make a huge addition to their lineup.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 14: Sacramento Kings
After getting a taste of the playoffs in 2023, last year's Kings could
not repeat the same magic. They only lost two more games and suffered
several injuries down the stretch that left them shorthanded. However,
the rest of the Western Conference also got much stronger, and the Kings
probably weren't any closer to getting out of the first round. The
Kings will look to aggressively improve the roster this summer and will
seek upgrades in the trade market to improve their starting lineup and
bench. But they also need to maintain what they have. Malik Monk is
entering unrestricted free agency and is limited to offering him a
four-year, $78 million contract. Will that be enough to retain him or
will another team with cap space steal him away? It will be a challenge
for the Kings to accomplish all their goals, which could require an
expensive payroll for them to improve over rival teams in the West and
sustain their core for several more seasons.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 13: New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans FINALLY had a (mostly) healthy season and gave this group
its fair shot. And they did well maintaining a top 6 seed throughout
most of the season. However, they dropped all the way down to the 8 seed
and were completely outclassed by the Thunder in the first round of the
playoffs. Now that the organization understands the roster and its
personnel more, they can identify who to move and who to bring in. They
are reportedly seeking an upgrade at center, which is obvious, but also
at point guard. They've been linked to Trae Young, Darius Garland, and
Dejounte Murray, and I think they have the assets to get any of them as
well as a center like Jarrett Allen or Clint Capela. With Trey Murphy
set to extend and get promoted to the starting lineup, Ingram seems like
the odd man out, especially with a max extension looming. But if
they're also bringing in a new point guard, they should probably move CJ
McCollum as well. It may be complicated to pull all that off, but
thankfully they have up to 6 first-round picks they could trade to move
things along.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 12: Philadelphia 76ers
This is going to be an extremely consequential offseason for the Sixers.
With James Harden not working out, the 76ers pivoted to maximizing
their cap space this summer to reshape the roster around Joel Embiid.
The only other player guaranteed to return is Tyrese Maxey, who is set
to sign a maximum contract with them this summer. Because of his
upcoming raise, the Sixers have this summer as their only window to have
the flexibility to pursue upgrades in free agency or trades. They are
projected to have between $57-65 million, which is enough to sign or
absorb anybody. They also can trade up to 5 first-round picks in a
trade. They’ve already been linked to just about every big name like
Paul George, Jimmy Butler, and Brandon Ingram. In this video, I’ll run a
couple projections where the Sixers can get these types of players and
show how they can fill the rest of the roster out.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 11: Los Angeles Clippers
It's been five years of this and the Clippers have more or less had the
same result. Aside from their 2021 run to the Western Conference Finals,
most of their postseason appearances have been hampered by injuries. It
seems like they're set to run it back despite the team's aging core.
They already extended Kawhi Leonard to a three-year deal but Paul George
reportedly wants a full four-year maximum contract. It seems crazy that
they would continue with this group, but I'm not convinced that it
means they're committing to them for the long run. If everyone returns, I
think it's possible that this Clippers team could slowly break apart if
the team continues to fall short of expectations.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 10: Isaiah Hartenstein
Is it possible that Isaiah Hartenstein has played so well that he priced
himself out of a return to the Knicks? That seems to be a possibility
since they are limited to offering him a four-year deal worth $72.5
million. A team with cap space that really likes him could easily outbid
the Knicks for his services. Some of the teams being mentioned as
potential suitors, according to Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer, include the
Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, and Orlando Magic. In this video
I analyze those teams and their potential fit with him and how they
could fit him with their cap space. I also talk about why a return to
the Knicks on a short-term deal, so he could become a free agent again
next year and re-sign for more money, is out of the question.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 4: Miami Heat
Last year it was Damian Lillard. This year Donovan Mitchell could be the
Heat's top trade target this summer if he doesn't commit to an
extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. But even if a trade is possible,
can the Heat sustain fielding a roster paying him, Jimmy Butler, and
Bam Adebayo top dollar? Both players are extension-eligible for maximum
contracts this summer which wouldn't kick in for a while, so they could
possibly sustain a brief run with this trio. But what if they don't have
enough to get him or another All-Star? Do they consider re-signing
Caleb Martin or Haywood Highsmith or do they let them go and remain
faithful in their ability to find the next role players to replace them?

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 8: Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns went as all-in on this team as any other front office
has ever done in NBA history. They have all but two first-round picks
available to trade, but that may not help them much. Because of their
expensive rosters, they are severely limited in the types of trades
they're allowed to make. Trading Bradley Beal for several cheaper
players like a rim-protecting center and a point guard would help, but
there's probably no market for him. All they could really do this summer
is re-sign Royce O'Neale, and fill up the roster with minimum players.
Kevin Durant and Devin Booker aren't going anywhere yet, but another
disappointing season could force the Suns to move one of them as this
payroll reaches preposterous levels of expenses.

The NBA offseason hasn't begun until the Los Angeles Lakers have been
linked to a star player. Over the last few years it was Kyrie Irving,
now this year it's Trae Young and Donovan Mitchell. Both would be
welcome additions to the Lakers lineup in theory, but do the Lakers even
have enough assets to get a trade done? And even if they do, how would
the rest of the roster look like? There are new trade rules in the CBA
that trigger hard caps when teams take in more salaries than they're
sending out or even combine players to get a more expensive one. If they
can land one of these guys, the backend of the roster could suffer
because of these new rules.
