June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 11: Los Angeles Clippers
It's been five years of this and the Clippers have more or less had the
same result. Aside from their 2021 run to the Western Conference Finals,
most of their postseason appearances have been hampered by injuries. It
seems like they're set to run it back despite the team's aging core.
They already extended Kawhi Leonard to a three-year deal but Paul George
reportedly wants a full four-year maximum contract. It seems crazy that
they would continue with this group, but I'm not convinced that it
means they're committing to them for the long run. If everyone returns, I
think it's possible that this Clippers team could slowly break apart if
the team continues to fall short of expectations.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 10: Isaiah Hartenstein
Is it possible that Isaiah Hartenstein has played so well that he priced
himself out of a return to the Knicks? That seems to be a possibility
since they are limited to offering him a four-year deal worth $72.5
million. A team with cap space that really likes him could easily outbid
the Knicks for his services. Some of the teams being mentioned as
potential suitors, according to Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer, include the
Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, and Orlando Magic. In this video
I analyze those teams and their potential fit with him and how they
could fit him with their cap space. I also talk about why a return to
the Knicks on a short-term deal, so he could become a free agent again
next year and re-sign for more money, is out of the question.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 4: Miami Heat
Last year it was Damian Lillard. This year Donovan Mitchell could be the
Heat's top trade target this summer if he doesn't commit to an
extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. But even if a trade is possible,
can the Heat sustain fielding a roster paying him, Jimmy Butler, and
Bam Adebayo top dollar? Both players are extension-eligible for maximum
contracts this summer which wouldn't kick in for a while, so they could
possibly sustain a brief run with this trio. But what if they don't have
enough to get him or another All-Star? Do they consider re-signing
Caleb Martin or Haywood Highsmith or do they let them go and remain
faithful in their ability to find the next role players to replace them?

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 8: Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns went as all-in on this team as any other front office
has ever done in NBA history. They have all but two first-round picks
available to trade, but that may not help them much. Because of their
expensive rosters, they are severely limited in the types of trades
they're allowed to make. Trading Bradley Beal for several cheaper
players like a rim-protecting center and a point guard would help, but
there's probably no market for him. All they could really do this summer
is re-sign Royce O'Neale, and fill up the roster with minimum players.
Kevin Durant and Devin Booker aren't going anywhere yet, but another
disappointing season could force the Suns to move one of them as this
payroll reaches preposterous levels of expenses.

The NBA offseason hasn't begun until the Los Angeles Lakers have been
linked to a star player. Over the last few years it was Kyrie Irving,
now this year it's Trae Young and Donovan Mitchell. Both would be
welcome additions to the Lakers lineup in theory, but do the Lakers even
have enough assets to get a trade done? And even if they do, how would
the rest of the roster look like? There are new trade rules in the CBA
that trigger hard caps when teams take in more salaries than they're
sending out or even combine players to get a more expensive one. If they
can land one of these guys, the backend of the roster could suffer
because of these new rules.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 6: Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers took two short trips to the lottery and made it back
to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in a decade. Context
for their playoff path aside, it's a pretty quick turnaround for them
considering they only pivoted away from the Domantas Sabonis-led core
just two years ago. They are now locked into this core led by Tyrese
Haliburton who is about to start making maximum dollars. Pascal Siakam
is going to command just as much, and they have some decisions to make
on other players like Obi Toppin. There isn't much for the organization
to do this offseason beyond retaining everyone and developing more
continuity.

The Oklahoma City Thunder's future is looking extremely bright with Shai
Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams. They became the
youngest team to win a playoff series and are so close to getting to the
Finals. They need to address their frontcourt and they have the means
to do it. Armed with $33 million in cap space, they could sign just
about any top forward who wants to join. They also have so many draft
picks to make an adequate offer for just about any frontcourt player in a
trade. The possibilities are abundant, and I go over one where they use
some of their flexibility to lock up Isaiah Joe while adding an
All-Star forward.

June 12, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 3: Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers have incrementally progressed over the past
three seasons with a talented but flawed roster. After winning their
first playoff series, expectations are picking up and the pressure is on
organizationally. The biggest domino is Donovan Mitchell. They gave up a
lot for him and need to keep him long-term. If he doesn't extend, do
they risk taking him into free agency? Either way, it sounds like at
least one of him or Darius Garland will be traded this season. And with
Evan Mobley set to get a significant extension this summer, do they
consider trading Jarrett Allen as well? And would acquiring another max
player like Brandon Ingram make sense for their payroll long-term? It
may be time to split up the two small guards and two centers to create a
more versatile lineup.

The New York Knicks are in such a great place heading into the
offseason. They have two key free agents to re-sign in OG Anunoby and
Isaiah Hartenstein. Both will get significant raises, but the Knicks
should be able to pay whatever it takes to retain them while keeping the
payroll reasonable. At the same time, they're still armed with 8
first-round picks to trade for a star. Will that player finally become
available? I go over contract projections for Anunoby, Hartenstein, as
well as Jalen Brunson, and show how they could also potentially add an
expensive star like Giannis Antetokounmpo while abiding by the new trade
rules.

June 11, 2024 2024 Free Agency/Offseason Series - Ep 1: Denver Nuggets
Hi everyone, this is my first video on this channel where I discuss the
NBA with a focus on the salary cap. The Denver Nuggets were eliminated
last night but this core will still be contending for titles. But for
how much longer? It seems obvious that they'll keep everyone, but the
new CBA could make it challenging. They'll probably happily spend
whatever it takes, but they probably want to at least avoid the newly
implemented second apron. I get into that and explain how the Nuggets
could potentially do that over the following two seasons while giving
Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope new contracts.
They may have no choice but to be over the second apron at some point,
but there's definitely a pathway to avoid it.
