The Okeechobee Hurricane, also known as the San Felipe Segundo Hurricane made landfall near West Palm Beach, Florida as a Category 4 storm during the evening hours of September 16th, back in 1928 and still stands today after all this time as was one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the Atlantic basin.

But at the turn of the millennium, the isolated island nation would play host to the world and the world would gather and witness "Australia’s Extremes", that kicked off with the Opening Ceremonies that took place on September 15th, 2000.

It was the first hurricane to hit the state since Hurricane Iwa in the 1982 season, and the first major hurricane since Hurricane Dot in 1959. Today we look back to the year 1992 when a category 4 Hurricane steamrolled over Hawaii; this day in weather history.

Today back on September 9, 1775, a violent hurricane swept over what was, at that time, the British colony of Newfoundland. In its onslaught, it sank many fishing boats as well as two British naval vessels. Remember, we were at the outset of the American War of Independence so this storm has also been referred to as The “Independence Hurricane”.
