It started in a bakery down a lane called "Pudding"; but before it was finally extinguished, this fire swept through the central parts of the city from September 2nd through the 6th, back in 1666. Among the charred damage was a total gutting of the medieval City of London inside the old Roman city wall.

Destroying nearly 100% of the Caribbean Island of Barbuda, Irma was also it was also the most intense hurricane to strike the continental United States since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the first major hurricane to make landfall in Florida since Wilma in the same year, and the first Category 4 hurricane to strike "The Sunshine State" since Charley in 2004.

Central America, and in particular the country of Nicaragua was badly beaten by a violent Category 5 storm; Hurricane Felix. How bad was it? Due to the extent of the damage and the amount of people killed by this storm in Nicaragua, the name FELIX was officially retired by the World Meteorological Organization during its annual meeting in Orlando, Florida on May 13, 2008 , and will never be used again for any future Atlantic hurricanes.

The Ontario Provincial Police described the pile-up as "a massive fireball"! You can't see a thing...and that was Ontario Canada's Highway 401 on this day in weather history.

We’ve mentioned it in past podcast episodes and compared it already to so many of the strongest in American History; "The Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935" was the most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall on record in terms of barometric pressure, and is tied with Hurricane Dorian in 2019 (yesterday's podcast episode) for the strongest landfalling Atlantic hurricane by maximum sustained winds, with winds of 185 mph (295 km/h). It was also the most intense Atlantic hurricane on record until Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.

It was on this day one year ago that we witnessed the most devastating weather event to ever strike The Bahamas...Hurricane Dorian!It was also one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in all of the Atlantic Ocean when it packed a sustained wind that peaked at 185 mph (295 km/h) for a full minute!

This was the largest recorded earthquake in the history of the southeastern United States. This earthquake near Charleston, South Carolina, severely damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings and sadly killed more than 100 people.

This tornado occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 28, 1990; very late in the season. It is the only the second F5 tornado ever recorded in August in the United States, and the only F5 tornado to strike the Chicago area.
