Have you ever experienced shame or guilt? Have you ever experienced shame and guilt because you are a white man?
If you answered yes to either than this episode is definitely for you!
This episode continues where I left off last episode with Joe Bernstein, Leader and Coach for Healthy Masculinity – who is passionate about unpacking the intersections of race and gender.
In the last few months we have seen a shift in what I described in the last episode as collective agreement about what is tolerable. This led to white men particularly, but not exclusively, avowing their guilt and shame for their role in systemic oppression.
An important element of this conversation is taking a closer look at the emotions of blame, shame and guilt. We explore them as an emotional catalyst for action. We consider whether these emotions can be harmful if they are the foundation for action.
The conversation, however, is richer than this narrow focus. Rather the primary focus, which motivates the conversation is: '
How can men deepen their emotional capacity?'. We explore this through the lens of
Relationships, Violence, Racism and Oppression. Although there is a lot here which centres on white male privilege the focus goes beyond skin pigmentation and there are ideas which are valuable independent of gender.
Here are some of the questions we explore:
Why do some men appear like Dr Jekyll and wind up being like Mr Hyde?
We usually think of violence as physical but what about the importance of understanding emotional violence?
Can we grow our emotional capacity through discomfort? Is there value in holding guilt and shame?
Is there value in holding guilt and shame?
Could being emotionally needy be harmful to social justice movements?
How can we shift from domination to a liberation logic? If you are ready to go from being the passenger in your life to the owner of your life then for a limited time go to: bit.ly/creatingpowerfulleaders
