“Chris and I are working from Buenos Aires and traveling about Argentina for two months.” That was an email I received back from a person in my network the other day. It made me stop and think, is there a reason why I’m not working from Buenos Aires, or anywhere other than home right now for that matter.
What are the benefits of the so-called “Work from Anywhere” trend? Well research suggests that there are a number of benefits, not just for employees, but companies and society as a whole when we are allowed to work from wherever we want. Have you ever thought about creating communication goals? We set goals for lots of other things in our lives, exercise, eating healthy, milestone projects and many more.
What would it look like if we approached communication in a more strategic way? I wonder how much better we would be at asking for what we want, delegating tasks, communicating ideas, initiating interesting conversations, repairing relationships, furthering our careers - if we knew exactly why we were talking and what the goal of our words really are.
Listen to this week's episode as I talk with Brenden Kumarasamy, founder and President of Master Talk to discuss how becoming a top 1% communicator in your industry will change just about everything in your career and maybe even your life.

Are you old enough to remember a world without cell phones or text messaging - where the only phone you had was attached to a wall in your house, most likely in your kitchen, and if you wanted a private conversation you needed to stretch the phone cord all the way into the bathroom and shut the door.
You’d think with all the advances in cellular technology that we would be better at communicating with each other - but the opposite is true. The original definition of the word phone comes from a Greek word meaning “distant voice”. But we very rarely use our voice when we use our cell phones, we generally use our phones to send emails or texts, sometimes texting someone who is in the same exact room as us instead of using our own voice to communicate with them.

A 2013 study conducted by the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University Showed that women are keenly aware of the rewards of visibility. They know that being noticed — for example, by interjecting during meetings and taking credit for accomplishments — is a conventional strategy for professional advancement. Still, to this day many women consciously reject this strategy. Instead, women employ “intentional invisibility” opting for risk-averse, conflict-avoidant strategies in the office.
Another study found that in the field of science, close to 50% of black and Latina scientists are routinely mistaken for janitorial or administrative staff. This is why campaigns like “the more you see her” launched by NBC Universal in 2020 are so very important for women of color - because so often people who look like them are not visible in positions of authority and power.
Listen is to this weeks episode as I talk with Janet Kafadar, a coach who works with Women of Color, helping them find the courage to be visible.

We know St. Valentine as the Patron Saint of Love, but he was also the patron saint beekeeping, fainting, and the plague. Doesn’t that just ooze romance?
Studies show that there is some serious polarization around valentines day. Almost half of Americans describe Valentine's Day as "overrated," yet another 43 percent call it "romantic."
Listen in for a little history of Valentine's Day and to learn the 3 reasons why people like me (and almost half of Americans) don’t particularly care for Valentine's Day.

Can the time of day affect how creative you are, whether or not you will get a raise when you ask for it, if you will get better treatment in a hospital or score better on tests. Well, the research overwhelmingly says yes, to all those things and many more.
Big data studies show that there is a two hour window during the day that doctors are more likely to give a fatal dose of anesthesia? In that same two hours students are more likely to bomb on standardized tests and CEO’s are more likely to say something stupid on quarterly earnings calls, leading to a plummet in their stock price?
These two hours is what Daniel Pink calls the Bermuda Triangle of day. Listen in to learn when these two hours are and how to manage our workflow around them, in addition learn when our most productive time of the day is as well as our most creative.

The concept of music as a healing influence, one which can affect our health and behavior is at least as old as the writings of Aristotle and Plato and in some cultures, long before that.
Music Therapy, as a 20th century profession formally began after World Wars I and II when community musicians of all types, both amateur and professional, traveled to Veterans hospitals around the country to play for the thousands of veterans suffering both physical and emotional trauma from the wars. The patients' notable physical and emotional responses to music led the doctors and nurses to request the hiring of musicians by the hospitals.
Listen in as I talk with Kristi Faby, the Director of Creative Arts Therapies at The South Shore Conservatory about the healing powers of music and how we can incorporate music therapy into our everyday lives.

The first thing we usually say to someone who has suffered a loss is “Let me know if there is anything I can do.” It’s a great sentiment - but it’s almost completely useless because more often than not the person has no idea what they need, they are still in shock and numbed by the loss.
Losing someone is a life changing experience. That person now lives in a world that is forever changed by the absence of their loved one, and because of this words can seem inadequate.
Listen in for 7 ways to show and express sympathy to someone who is experiencing the loss of a loved one.

The Golden Girls premiered in 1985. The show revolved around four older single women (three widows and one divorcée) all sharing a house in Miami. The show lasted 7 seasons and I have watched each of the 180 episodes multiple times. The show is genius and dare I say that I learned a lot about sarcasm and comedic timing from this show - especially from Dorothy’s character.
There is no doubt that the show is funny, but it is also extremely deep - and it has a number of life lessons to teach. Listen in to hear the life lessons we can all learn from those four Golden Girls.

Has anyone ever said to you, “don’t quit your day job”. This is such a sh!t thing to say, because it implies that if you aren’t proficient at something from the beginning, then you never will be and you should give up trying. One of the biggest mistakes you can make in business is thinking that things will come to you quickly. Believing that anyone has ever become an overnight success.
Listen in as I talk with the one and only Darren LaCroix, the author of two books: Laugh & Get Rich and The Speaker’s Edge. He is the only speaker in the world who is an Accredited Speaker, Certified Speaking Professional and a World Champion of Public Speaking. Darren discusses how during his journey from chump to champ he discovered a formula that yielded such abundant success, it surprised even himself.
