In a world threatening to be pulled into the black hole of laziness and leisure, the way forward will be to renew our strong commitment to industriousness as a critical virtue – aka, hard work.

The biblical/old testament model (Exodus 20:9) leads us to work six days per week and rest one day per week. Traditionally as Americans, we enjoy a rigorous five-day work week with one day designated for rest and recreation and then an additional day dedicated to corporate worship.

Let’s beware of and outright reject the growing push for fewer hours/days of work and more days of idleness. Wealth is almost always squandered three generations after it was earned, largely because the work ethic which earned it was jettisoned for the love of leisure. As Americans, let’s re-commit ourselves afresh to the glorious joy of the American work ethic.

Memorial Day is a national holiday – it is next Monday, May 29th this year. It is the day we honor those who have died while serving in our country’s military. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

This year, may we not only remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for our nation but may their sacrifice serve to revive the same spirit in us today. May their ultimate expression of sacrifice and love capture our hearts to rise to the same level of commitment to return our nation once again to truly be the one nation under God we must be if we will continue to serve not only our posterity but also the world as the clear beacon of human freedom and flourishing.

We must love enough on the soul and society level to raise standards – morally, educationally, and in every other arena of life. When we raise standards souls and society can thrive. If love isn’t tough, it isn’t love.
