  • Mastering the Light with MagMod
    In this interview I have an inspiring discussion with Trevor Dayley, from the MagMod team. Trevor and I discuss light, weddings, and his passion for both. Specifically we get into light modifiers like MagMod and how they’re used to help photographers wrangle their photons into submission.
    If you want to know more how to control, shape and color your light with flash modifiers, Trevor Dayley is your guy! Having shot over 300 weddings, he has a wee bit of experience and loves sharing it with others. Trevor and his wife have six beautiful kiddos, and they dig traveling. Last summer all eight of them did a month-long, cross-country road trip in a mini-van. Not only did they survive, but loved every minute of the crazy family adventure.
    MagMod says their mission is to make awesome photography easy, by making tools that get out of the way of being more creative.

  • Capturing Thailand from a Backpack
    In this interview I chat with Justin Majeczki. We discuss his recent trip to Thailand on a documentary project, specifically from the aspect of his gear choices and overall logistics. Traveling with just a single backpack of gear and roller-bag Justin was able to create a stunning and professional travel video about Thailand.
    About Justin, in his own words…
    I am a digital content creator based out of Reno, NV. I specialize in time-lapse photography, travel videos, documentary filmmaking, landscape photography and more. I have been shooting and editing since I was 13 years old and have been able to watch the industry change dramatically over the past 17 years. I work alongside my wife, Cady Majeczky to help brands promote themselves through engaging videos and photos. In a world of over saturation it can be hard to stand out amongst the competition and make your mark. This is where we come in with our vision based approach in creating brand content that connects on an emotional level with the viewer.

  • Sunrise Photo Tips & Tricks
    Bryan Hansel is a Grand Marais, Minnesota based landscape photographer that was suggested by Behind the Shot viewer Robert Ferdinandt, who said:
    “His work is fantastic and his instagram feed is a must follow for landscape lovers. One of the things I love about him are his shots in weather. I also live in northern MN and know just how cold it gets and when it’s -20 degrees fahrenheit I will see him out shooting and it just inspires me to brave the cold and keep shooting.”
    I was sold by the first line, and the -20 degrees part just locked it in – I needed to talk to Bryan.
    Saying Bryan is an award winning photographer doesn’t seem to come close to describing him, or his work. With a career spanning over 25 years Bryan has had credits in National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer, Lake Superior Magazine, National Park Traveler, Ocean Paddler, Canoeroots, Adventure Kayak, Canoe and Kayak Magazine, Backpacker Magazine and more. I was surprised to find out that he opened his photography business as a Real Estate photographer, before moving towards fine-art landscapes, magazine work, portraits, and commercial work.
    As an educator Bryan leads workshops that give his students access to some of the best, and often unknown, locations in the northland and across the nation.
    His minimalistic approach to his composition leads to images with a strong impact, and again, he is taking many of these in extreme conditions.
    Join landscape photographer Bryan Hansel and me on this episode of Behind the Shot as we discuss his beautiful image of a cold Minnesota sunrise.

  • Envision The Scene
    James Neihouse is a name you need to know. A graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography, James has done more in the field of photography and videography than I would guess anyone else you have met, ever, anywhere. I know what you’re thinking, but nope…. I am not even close to kidding.
    James is a member of The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) – Cinematography Branch, along with numorous other organizations. My fave line item on James’ resume is this one:
    Director of Photography and Astronaut Training Manager for IMAX space productions.
    James has trained more than 130 astronauts on 20 shuttle flights and 6 space station missions in the operation of the IMAX camera!
    In fact, James has Camera operator, Assistant cameraman, and Lighting experience on more than 1,000 film and video projects, and is listed in IMDB as having 32 Cinematographer credits. He worked on the IMAX film Ocean, the first underwater film made in the format, and has since worked on more than 30 IMAX and other large format films. His first credit as director of photography was on the film The Eruption Of Mount St. Helens, which was the first IMAX film to be nominated for an Academy Award®. I am trying to not make this a multi-page bullet list, but the truth is that describing James Neihouse requires a clear explanation of experience – lots of experience. Check out his about page here, a resume here, and his awards and affiliations here. Better yet, here is a demo reel. Also, here is his IMDB page – wow!
    As a photographer and educator James leads various workshops (https://www.jamesneihouse.com/workshops-2018) and is an in demand speaker. Coming up in early June 2018 James will lead his workshop to the Palouse, and as you can see from this episode it is a favorite spot for many photographers.
    Join me on this episode of Behind the Shot as I take a look at landscape photography through the eyes of an award-winning cinematographer, Jame Neihouse.

  • Own Your Niche! – TWiP 513
    These days it’s getting harder and harder to specialize. Content creators and photographers are being hit with requests to create (and be excellent at) all manner of media. But is it possible to be amazing at everything? Or should you pick a genre, focus and own that niche? In this episode Don Komarechka and Mike “Sharky” James join me to discuss some clear ways that you can specialize on your genre and become the master of ONE! And also, SHOULD you specialize?

    Photographer Sues for $2.7M over stolen bug shots

    Copyright infringement is something that most photographers have faced at least once. Recently, biologist and insect photographer Alex Wild has faced this problem as well. A company named Cypress Creek Pest Control used some of his bug photos on their web page. Wild’s website clearly states the terms of use, and the company reportedly neither paid for the photos nor asked for Alex’s permission. After failing to remove the images, Wild decided to sue them for a whopping $2.7 million.

  • The Panasonic Lumix G9 – All About the Gear
    The Lumix G9 is one of the latest camera releases from Panasonic. It’s significant in many ways, one of the main reasons being that it’s squarely targeted at “stills” photographers (versus video shooters). Panasonic asked questions, listened, then implemented the suggestions for professional landscape, nature, sports shooters and others.
    The result is a triumph in engineering. And I’d even go so far as to say the Lumix G9 is probably the best camera I’ve ever owned.
    The Specifications:
    So, let’s get some homework out of the way first. Some photographers (including myself) will say the specifications for this camera are impressive. Others will say it’s hamstrung by the small micro four-thirds sensor.
    My response for the “small sensor” gripe is that what works for you and your genre/style of photography may not work for others. This camera works for me… and many thousands of others.

    * 20.3 Megapixel Micro 4/3rds sensor with no anti-aliasing filter (same as GH5)
    * 20 FPS burst w/continuous AF frame rate using the e-shutter (for ~50 frames)
    * 9 FPS burst w/continuous AF using mechanical shutter (for 600+ frames)
    * ISO 100-25,600
    * Dust-resistant, freezeproof, splashproof – Magnesium body
    * 5-axis in-body image stabilization with Dual I.S. version 2.0 (6.5 stops)
    * Uses same batteries as GH3, GH4, GH5 and GH5S
    * Wi-Fi + Bluetooth
    * 1.04M-dot 3″ articulating touchscreen display
    * Dual UHS-II card slots supporting new high-speed ‘V’-rated cards
    * Assortment of 4K and 6K Photo modes and in-camera focus stacking

    What’s Different?
    So, that’s enough about the specs… what makes this camera different from other Lumix cameras? Even from it’s siblings, the GH5 and GH5s?

    * 80MP Raw and/or JPEG files using High-Resolution mode
    * Top Plate LCD
    * Nikon Style On/off backlight
    * Buttons positioned perfectly
    * Deep hand grip
    * Well thought-out buttons and dials
    * Good-enough Audio/video – 4K/60p UHD video capture
    * Night mode
    * Front custom switch
    * HUGE 60FPS EVF, 3.68M-dot electronic viewfinder w/ up to 0.83x equivalent magnification
    * USB charge and power capability

    The Bad Stuff:
    As we all know, there are no perfect cameras. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention a few quibbles that keep the G9 from being flawless.

    * Sensitive shutter button
    * Top LCD backlight turns off too quickly (not configurable?) On some Fuji’s the display stays activated constantly (not backlit) even when the camera is off.
    * Low light performance (damn physics)
    * Weight

    Conclusion:
    In short, the G9 is a triumph, especially at this price point. As I record this, you can snag a G9 (body only) for around $1,600US).
    It’s the obvious result of Panasonic engineering listening to its base, watching trends, and aiming squarely at producing a camera that is created unapologetically for still photographers — while still maintaining video capabilities that make similar cameras in its class jealous.
    I own a few Lumix cameras, and this is the first one that gives me that little electric feeling in the pit of my stomach!
    In the upcoming videos in this series, I’ll take the G9 out and put some of its stand-out features to the test.
    Grab the Panasonic Lumix G9 here (aff):
