Totally relatable and captivating conversation with the highly accomplished Dr. Jacqueline Patricia James-Lyttle, who graduated as the first black female engineering graduate from the United States Coast Guard Academy with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering in 2000
She also made her mark as a scholar athlete and currently holds four school records in track and field. She received the Master’s of Science in Architectural Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy in Civil and Architectural Engineering from the University of Miami in 2002 and 2005 respectively.
As a student, she was awarded two fellowships from the International Peace Scholarship (IPS) committee in 2001 and 2002 and one from the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2003. She was also the chief contributor in a student group that was awarded an EPA grant for work in energy efficiency design in 2004.
Dr. James-Lyttle received her first faculty appointment as a post-doctoral fellow from the Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. to join the faculty at the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2005. There, she taught Civil Engineering courses and volunteered as the sprint coach of the Coast Guard Academy’s men’s and women’s track team, and as an advisor to the international students’ club and the genesis (multicultural) club. She was hired by the Civil Architectural Environmental Engineering department at the University of Miami in August 2007. She taught courses in Architectural Engineering.
As an academic, Dr. James-Lyttle was awarded funding to conduct research on numerous topics, including a sustainability study of the proposed Argyle International airport in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a feasibility study on the use of crushed cathode ray tubes as aggregate replacement in concrete and the development of a novel mold and mildew resistant construction material. She has been the advisor to 11 graduate students and mentor to over 100 undergraduates.
She is the first author of several papers and conference presentations between 2002 and 2011.
In 2007, Dr. James-Lyttle founded IMARA Engineering Consulting, and currently practices in South Florida. IMARA serves the US and the Caribbean providing services in green building design and engineering, renderings, construction management, systems integration, sustainable “green” design and certification, energy analysis, computational fluid dynamics “CFD” and interior design services.

There may have been times you've been asked to work over or change your day off, been given last minute requests to make changes to a piece of work or you just generally don't want to do what's been asked of you. As women we have many demands/situations where our time and attention is demanded, often leaving very little time for own sanity and precious me time.
As I’m writing this I’m realizing that there are numerous areas where you may want to say no but just haven’t felt confident to do so, such as your Boss, Colleagues, Partner/Husband, Children and whilst there maybe similarities in some of the skills needed to say the ‘No” there is no one size fits all, cookie cutter method. So in this episode I’m to going to start with how to say no to your Boss and will follow up with the other scenarios in the future.
I hope you enjoyed the show and I would love to hear your feedback! I know you enjoy what I share in this episode, so if you could please subscribe, rate, review or comment on iTunes or your chosen listening platform, I would really appreciate it.
