“And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem. And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath...” (Mark 15:39–42).
“Truly this Man was the Son of God.” No truer, more important words have ever been spoken by mortal tongue than these, yet flesh and blood has not revealed it to those who embrace this confession.
When you have the opportunity, please prayerfully read the entire story leading up to, and including the crucifixion of Jesus. You will note many seminal moments, that if you embrace them, will absolutely change your life. One such moment is underscored in our theme text.
A man who probably did not grow up going to the temple to worship the true and living God received the greatest message of hope as he stood guard one Friday afternoon. While many who claimed to worship YHWH jeered, “Crucify him!” and loathed YHWH’s Son, considering Him a blasphemer, a commander in the ancient Roman army recognized His eternal essence when He looked His weakest. As He gave His life for lost sinners, having been paraded from mock-trial to mock-trial, beaten, bloodied, and disrespected, each person watching His sacred act of submission faced a decision: would they surrender themselves to the revelation His life and ministry gave of divinity dwelling in humanity? Would they continue to rebuff YHWH’s entreaties to accept the gift of salvation?
I find it intriguing that as Jesus prepared to rest during the Sabbath hours, having completed one vital phase of the salvation plan, the lasting impact had already begun. He surrendered His will to His Father and rested. Are you resting in Him as He moves through the various phases of salvation in your life? Are you thankful for the times YHWH reveals to you that Jesus is the Savior of the world? Do you embrace those seminal moments when He gives you an encounter with truth?
In the same way Jesus rested in the tomb that Sabbath, we can rest because He has the plan to save us well in hand. As with the centurion, at the times we least expect and most need, our Heavenly Father manifests Himself to us. Jesus gave His life for you so you could rest in His power to save you from every besetting sin. Follow the centurion’s lead. Open your mouth (and heart), and confess that this Man is the Son of God, embracing all that means in context of giving you victory and everlasting life.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
