Sean says:   Polyester is JW's second most important movie. A tour de force by Divine who was robbed of a Best Actress Oscar. Edith Massey is genius as Cuddles and even veteran Hollywood heartthrob Tab Hunter is pretty good. I love this movie more than just about any other movie that I know. It's everything right and wrong with America. And so high brow!

Sean says:   The Room is very special. A combination of insanely weird personality, absolutely no talent, and an unstoppable desire to tell an incomprehensible story that should never have been told results in a movie that under the most generous circumstances should have been stillborn but instead has survived the test of time. A spectacular train wreck that I will watch again and again. Montetré does a pretty good Tommy W impression. A little too good.

Montetré says:   I got to play Johnny in a staged reenactment of this movie's original script.  It was the most fun I've ever had playing a character on stage.  Oh man, the entire cast was so wonderful to work with.  Much respect to them.  With every one of the 16 shows we did, the audience went fucking wild for this bonkers entity.  One day, I want to make a sequel where Johnny is rumored to be alive, and it would be called The Room-er.  It would also introduce a real love interest for Johnny, someone just as strange, including their own unidentifiable accent.  Then, I think the third movie would center around Johnny establishing a company that helps those who have been betrayed.  That movie would be called The Room-est.

Sean says:   Lost Horizon brought together the best talent Hollywood had to offer who then, on purpose, produced this fantastic film nightmare set to a Bacharach score with 30% less racism than the original! I love this movie. I love that John Gielgud plays an Asian named Chang and I never miss a Liv Ulmann musical!

Montetré says:   The original is as solid as a racist rock.  The remake is as wet as sloppy shit.  Which is more fun to have on a Slip n' Slide?  Many would choose sloppy shit over rocks, and I am no different.  The stink won't get off of you for some time, and telling folks about this musical will either garner or lose you friends, because it's not your normal musical.  Uncomfortable is probably the right word for it.

Sean says:   Hamlet 2 doesn't suck.  Montetré thinks it is a lot better than I do.  And it seems to have had a big influence on him ("coo coo bananas" repeated not rarely).  Great acting all around from cast especially Steve Coogan without whom there would never have been a movie made of this stinker script written by Andrew Fleming and Pam Brady.  Andrew Fleming also directed for better or worse.

Montetré says:   I wish I could explain why this movie makes so much sense to me, and I think we did that a bit here.  I do think H2 is an unsung hero of a musical... some weirdly heart-warming satire on those films where that good-hearted teacher tries to reach those seemingly unreachable kids, only this time through theatre and good ol' fashioned teamwork.  It's a foul-mouthed joy.

Sean says:   Montetré and I discuss I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore, a 2017 film made by my favorite production company XYZ and starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. I love this movie despite the long, long name which I often get wrong when I am telling people about it. IDFAHITWA focuses on the central thesis of "why do people have to be assholes" and is told with heart and sincerity. And most astonishingly of all, it changed my view of Elijah Wood completely and I no longer see only dancing eyebrows and a grubby hobbit hand clutching a ring when I think of him. I hope I was able to convince Montetre of this film's brilliance. We'll see.

Montetré says:   Summer is over.  Woohoo?  This locally made film starring some top tier talent was a joy to watch and discuss.  So much of Portland is in this movie.  Even the exterior my own studio is a location in this film.  I think I was falling in love with IDFAHITWA up until the final thirty minutes.  It's still a well-executed indie, but it's not likely going to stay in my memory banks for too long.  Still, I really do enjoy much of the character acting from all of the supporting cast.  Also, keep your gigantic monkey dick out of my good pussy.

Sean says:   Bowfinger is a movie about a movie where they show a movie. I like movies like that and there are some great things about Bowfinger. Eddie Murphy being the most obvious. But imagine a big star like Steve Martin writing a script that he is going to star in... lots of great moments for Steve Martin. And Eddie Murphy. And in fairness, lots of great moments for the supporting cast of wonderful actors. I could tell you what happens in the movie but I am less clear on what the movie is about. Is there anything to Bowfinger beyond a couple of laughs? Is that important? No and no. But a group of rag tag adorables working hard on a combined effort is always a heart warmer. And the plan Bowfinger devises to make his movie is pretty funny to be sure. But it is interesting to compare Bowfinger to Zack and Miri Make a Porno made 10 years later and written by a writer instead of a star. Both films win some and lose some. One of the great things about movies is that stories resonate with you or they don't a nd it's not necessarily a reflection on the movie. So be Bowfinger and make your movie. Tell your story.

Montetré says:   Before beginning production on any feature film of my own, I watch this silly movie.  It never fails to make me laugh, and I'm always inspired.  Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy work so fucking great together.  I love this whole cast.  If I could change any aspect of Bowfinger, I'd've loved more scenes of the cast/crew making their film within the film.  It's so damn sharp that it's almost too quick at times.  Bowfinger really speaks for itself, but what it says to me is that anything is possible.  You can make your own movies and when you do many unplanned events will occur, so keep your chin up.  The seemingly worst times in your life will lead to the greatest ideas, with potential for true growth.  You don't need money as much as you need dedication and fucking heart.  Keep on grinding.  If you do make a feature, a little money does help.  Somewhere around the range of $2,184.

Axel says:   I have a hard time picking a "favorite movie" but for the past four-ish years this movie is the one that comes to mind first. It takes me on a whole roller coaster of emotion, and then crashes, and I love it. It's sexy and ugly and traumatizing and beautiful in all the right ways.

Montetré says:   Real happy to be talking about this episode.  It's difficult to find a more pitch perfect film.  It's so dirty in all of the right ways.  I didn't realize there was a director's cut out there.  Who knew?  Regardless, this movie is so damn smart.  BN probably has the most re-watch value out of all the movies reviewed on our episodes so far, whatever that means.  If you haven't seen it either before or lately you're doing yourself a disservice.  It's such a booster shot of all the feels.  I'm happy that it exists.

Sean says:   Gonna act as cockblock for my friend Montetré who has a hard crush on a clingy, needy, drunk little movie called Somewhere In Time. He can't see this flick for what it is. But I am older, wiser in the ways of celluloid love, and I'm not looking at this thing through a rose tinted Edwardian era flat screen. I see it for the cheap little tart it is... being a faded cheap tart myself. But the music really is beautiful! And for $3.99 it might be worth it to spend 90 minutes alone with it. What happens in your Amazon rental history stays in your Amazon rental history. Montetré probably won't even be jealous. Probably.

Montetré says:   I'm too big a fan of this flick.  After seeing it for the first time a few years back, it really stuck with me.  In the podcast I went on a bit about why, but I did forget to mention that the whole film has a pretty cool connection to Gustav Mahler.  They wanted to but couldn't use his music, or anything from John Barry that might be inspired by it, because Mahler's pieces are simply too damn long and complicated for a 90-minute movie.  With the book it doesn't matter so much, so Mahler is mentioned there.  In the book it talks about Mahler's 9th Symphony being the main character's favourite piece of music.  If you haven't heard it his 9th before, you really should!  Anyway, John Barry went with a Rachmaninoff inspired score, in addition to his Rach's Rhapsody that plays throughout.

Sean says:    I saw The Hunger when it was released in 26BCE. The groovy 80's nightclub seemed like just a nightclub. I hadn't heard Bela Lugosi is Dead 300M times. And even though there is nothing but organza blowing in the breeze and vertical shadows from endless Venetian blinds owning every shot, The Hunger is awesome and will forever have a love scene between Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. And a scene where David Bowie ages decades while a cigarette burns in a lobby ashtray where smoking isn't even allowed. There is a lot to recommend this vampire movie but it's not everyone's cup of blood. A more romantic movie about murder from a more romantic time of murder. 

 Montetré says:    I read the book.  The movie is alright.  I read the book.  Bowie is super cool and all, but I liked him better as Warhol.  I read the book.  There's way more nudity in this than I remember.  I read the book.  Holy cow, can this movie pick a lane?  I read this book.  I see touches of genius throughout this movie, but I read the book.  The book is pretty awful, too.
