Three Guys Theologizing (3GT) episodes

  • Episode 193: A Holy Miscellany

Okay – 3GT took that title from a Baptist preacher. But it works, so on we go!

In this episode, after they discuss how unique a parishioner they have on their hands, the guys look at the short, pithy apostolic admonitions in the epistles. Places such as Romans 12:9-21 or 1 Thessalonians 5:14-26, where these commands come at you in machine gun-like succession. What is the purpose of these little commands? Why is their placement important in the epistles? Should they be considered part of the law of God? Why do congregations need to be familiar with them? What are some the 3GTers especially appreciate? And, perhaps most importantly, which ones do the guys need to apply on the show?

It’s rapid fire time on this episode of 3GT!

  • Episode 192: Prophetic Preaching

After the boys banter a bit, they get down to the subject at hand. The parishioner wants the preacher and preaching teacher to tell him what prophetic preaching is.

They begin by telling what it is not. Prophetic preaching is not lecturing, teaching, or giving a running commentary of the text. Rather, it is preaching with a burden. Preaching with moral force. Preaching with vivid illustration. Preaching with nuanced application. Preaching with eschatological urgency. Preaching with a Spirit-filled heart.

So with that description, do you still need to listen? We think so! Push play and enjoy another episode of 3GT!

  • Episode 191: Behind the Curtain

In the middle of summer, with all its Covid craziness, the guys decide to relax a bit, let their hair down (at least two of them), and give listeners a peek behind the podcast curtain. So if you want to learn more about the 3GT wizards behind the mics, go ahead and push the play button. But if you are looking for a serious discussion on theology, please save yourself the trouble and just go on to Episode 192.

They begin by discussing that “other 3GT” podcast that Scott thought he was going on. They then swivel to share some encouraging reviews the podcast has received. The guys next remind you of their new email address, and read some correspondence they received all due to Bill VanDoodewaard. Unbelievably, one new listener even shares that she used the Corona lock downs to listen to every episode of 3GT! From there, the 3GTers discuss how their summer has gone, family matters, and fall plans. Throughout it all, the pastor and parishioner go at it, shameful pleas for support are given, and bad jokes are told.

If you listen and groan, remember that just like the Wizard of Oz you were warned to pay no attention to those men behind the curtain!

  • Episode 190: Johnny Mac Attack

Pastor John MacArthur has had enough. Faced with new executive orders from California Governor Newsom that churches must not assemble at all due to the Corona virus, he took a stand, made a statement, and preached this past Lord’s Day on “We Must Obey God Rather than Man” to a packed assembly at Grace Community Church. “What do you 3GTers think?” a listener wanted to know.

So the guys discuss this situation. The lawyer in the group discusses how many rulers are overstepping their legal bounds at this time and explains why. MacArthurs’ words and actions are examined. He is commended in many ways for honoring Christ. The definition of the church as an assembly of God’s people is emphasized.

Yet nuances are teased out. As one response article states, other means may exist for honoring Christ that do not require defying civil authority. Differing local situations need to be considered. Principles on Christian liberty found in Romans 14 must be applied. At the end, an emphasis on Christian unity is stressed and Presbyterianism gets a shout-out.

Tune into another lively episode of 3GT! And for a bonus feature, you will even find out we even have an easier-to-spell email address!

  • Episode 189: Denomination Disputation

During these hot summer days, the 3GTers decide in this episode to go for a swim where few dare to go. They jump into the deep, shark-infested waters of denominations.

They first are treated to a sweeping history of the church and its major branches by one of their fellow co-hosts. Next, they look at where the origin of denominations is found. Then they explain the ugly nature of church schisms. But then they point out the preserving, family nature different tribes of the church offer. They give some pointers on what people should look for when searching for a church and even give a shout-out to a certain book on the subject. The gents conclude with encouragements on how they witness different denominations working together in brotherly love.

The guys do make it safely to shore after their summer dive. So jump on in and join them on another lively episode of Three Guys Theologizing!

  • Episode 188: Christian Civil Disobedience

Want an episode where our lawyer-parishioner is simply on fire? You’ve tuned into the right place!

For the pastor starts asking questions about the role of civil government and Christians’ relationship to it. Things start off mildly enough with a discussion about the latest social unrest, though the attorney reminds the others that our nation was founded on the civil disobedience known as the Revolutionary War. The show starts heating up a bit as Romans 13 is addressed, and the barrister distinguishes being subject to authorities versus giving a blind obedience to them. Then when accounts of civil obedience in the Bible are brought up, the prosecutor turns to the case law of Acts 16. He blazes with logical precision and legal brilliance as he examines the actions of citizens, police, and authorities alike, concluding by making the case for wise, restrained civil disobedience when necessary. He almost left the pastor speechless in his wake!

  • Episode 187: How Long, O Naive Ones?

If you do not know where that question comes from, you may want to look at Proverbs 1:20-22. For wisdom is shouting in the streets to be heard, and too few are listening! On this edition of 3GT, the guys seek to tune their ears into her cry.

After congratulating the parishioner on a few anniversaries, the men turn their attention to the wisdom found in the book of Proverbs. Questions are answered such as: Have the pastors preached from Proverbs and how so? What make the Proverbs helpful to elders in their shepherding? What is the aim of the book? How should wisdom be defined? How does Christ help us in living wisely? Why is there such a lack of wisdom seen in church leaders and in our generation? Why do the Proverbs contain so many warnings? Throughout this episode and especially at the end, the 3GTers share lessons from what this book of wisdom has taught them.

Proverbs were made for listening. So was this episode about them. Thus, tune in “my son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings!” (Prov. 4:20)

  • Episode 186: Fathers in the Faith

In this episode, the prof brings up the recent passing of Pastor John Tweed, who was a spiritual father to many in the church and especially to Kyle. After Pastor Borg commemorates John’s life and ministry, the 3GTers launch into a discussion about the importance of having fathers in the faith.

The guys first share experiences of older men who have strengthened them personally in the faith. They then talk about the Biblical examples of discipleship. From there they point out how the church is a family, and how spiritually-minded parenting relationships should arise organically. Then they address how the intentionality of the church’s structure with elders should lead to nurturing relationships. They offer advise on how to seek out help from older believers and the right heart posture we should have in the church toward one another. Finally, to put the T into 3GT, they address how the theology of fathering others is based on the relationship of the members of the Trinity with one another and the church. And all along the way, they act like brothers as they get some of their customary pokes and jokes in.

So join along in this episode of 3GT as one sweet saint is remembered and all saints are encouraged to learn more about their spiritual family!
