Three Guys Theologizing (3GT)

With the murder of George Floyd, racism, riots, and rancor are all around us. 3GT visits some of the difficult questions being asked at this time, and seeks to offer a Biblical perspective.

What type of questions? Well, questions such as these: Where do you turn to get truthful analysis at this time? How is racism defined? Is it identifiable as a Biblical sin? Is racism systemic in America? What is cultural Marxism?Should Christians participate in Black Lives Matter? How should white evangelicals respond? What role is the church to have at this time?

With the world on fire around us, 3GT offers in this episode a small cup of cold water in the hope that the Prince of Peace will use it to give some help and guidance to our listeners.

The guys have noted a phenomenon of late. High profile professing Christians leaving the faith. But they are not going quietly. Rather, they are sharing their deconversion testimonies. What gives?

The 3GTers explore what’s happening. They look at some of those leaving the fold, be it comedians Rhett and Link, pastors Rob Bell and Josh Harris, or professors such as Bart Ehrman who even encourages believers to doubt and leave. A number of reasons are given for why Christians are abandoning Christ, and how the Scriptures speak directly to the topic of apostasy. A special point is raised that the youth of the church are abandoning the faith during their college years. Encouragements are then offered for ways to prevent deconversions and pursue the wandering.

It is another timely and practical topic on this episode of Three Guys Theologizing!

On this 3GT episode, the guys are joined by a gentleman and a scholar. Dr. David Murray, Professor of Old Testament and Practical Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, is their guest as they discuss with him his new book on family worship entitled Exploring the Bible Together.

After remembering the good ole days when Kyle was his student at Puritan, David starts off by explaining the historical and Biblical basis for family worship. From there, he describes how Exploring the Bible Together is, as the subtitle says, “A 52-Week Family Worship Plan.” Each week of the year has a theme, such as “A New Nation” for Week 7 as a family reads selections from Exodus or “Lost & Found” in Week 35 as the readings focus on the parables of Luke 15. Each day of the week has a short passage for reading, with two discussion questions and a key lesson. Sundays are reserved for reflecting on that day’s sermon and provide a “catch up” day if needed. Other unique features, such as the overview of the Bible the plan gives, the focus on Christ it maintains, and even its artwork are discussed. Then, believing family worship is best learned by modeling, the episode concludes with David then leading the guys in a brief time of worship.

With the guys still longing for the church to reassemble fully again, they decide to spend some time reflecting on the Biblical pictures of the church. What can we learn by looking at the metaphors found in Scripture about the church?

Scott starts the episode waxing eloquently, leaving Kyle stunned and momentarily speechless. But then the guys get on track. They raise the imagery the Bible gives of the church. Such things as a family, a flock of sheep, an army, and a body. They discuss the way these word pictures for the church give truth to us in an experiential way, show the bonds church members have with one another, picture unity with variation, reflect the Trinity”s handiwork, and teach the union with Christ the church enjoys.

After their previous episode, where they interviewed Jennifer Greenberg, author of Not Forsaken: A Story of Life after Abuse, the 3GTers decided to bring her back on for a follow-up discussion. For they wanted to talk with her about dealing with abuse in the church.

The guys first interact with her on why many victims of abuse struggle to tell others. Jennifer shares how that, even when she did attempt to speak up, many of her pleas for help as a young girl up through her teenage years were not heard or were even dismissed by believers and church authorities. From there, she shares principles of advocacy for those suffering abuse, and a variety of counsel is given to the church and its leaders. Topics such as involving the civil authorities, providing a network of support to the victim, the manipulative tactics of abusers, wrongful application of Scriptures, and church discipline are explored. Toward the end, Jennifer’s personal account puts a sobering note on this episode, serving as a reminder of how the church must protect and rescue those in dangerous situations.
