A listener wanted to know what the 3GTers thought about Old Testament poverty laws and whether they support socialism or not. The guys love it when red meat is thrown their way!

So they begin by pointing out the preponderance of laws about the poor in the law of God and why they are there. They then explain why politicians touting socialism, who like to cite these laws to support their governing policies, are misquoting Scripture. The guys talk about the dangerous appeal of socialism, the need for justice and equity in taxation, and the duties of Christian citizens in obeying God’s law even while honoring the civil magistrate. They then emphasize the need for true justice, and how God’s Law emphasizes voluntary sacrificing for the poor rather than relying on government mandate. Indeed, this episode turns into a little bit of 3GP – three guys politicizing!

On this newest episode of 3GT, the guys don’t want to see a P added to the mixed up LGBTQ alphabet. (Oh wait, there already is on the longer form, but it doesn’t mean polygamy!) With the Utah legislature voting to decriminalize polygamy recently, and signs all around us it is already acceptable to many, the 3GTers do their best to address the issue of polygamy.

They begin by testifying that they each only have one wife just to put their cards on the table. Then they show how people attempt to use the Bible itself to support the practice of polygamy. But they quickly address this confusion. They reveal the Scripture-twisting in this ploy, outlining how God’s law condemns this practice in precept and precedent. The guys then turn their attention to the church, calling it to renewal in being salt and light in this area through preaching and modeling the gospel. When the sticky issue arises of what to do on a mission field where men may already have multiple wives, or if a group were to walk into your church that way, there is undeniably some stuttering but they do offer some thoughts on a matter that takes careful wisdom.

After bantering about what constitutes a big word, they discuss why there is so much confusion about the place of God’s law in the life of the Christian. Clearly unbelievers hate the convicting nature of the law. But why do Christians struggle with the law so? Common teaching errors are highlighted. Then helpful analogies and references are given to help believers see the law’s place in their lives. Finally, the guys spend time drawing applications on how to meditate on the law like we are encouraged to do in Scripture.

The guys lately have noticed people with black crosses on their foreheads. So they thought it might be important to discuss Lent. What is it, exactly, and should the church observe it?

They begin by discussing an event in church history related to Lent known as “The Affair of the Sausages” that Zwingli got started with some hot preaching. From there, they journey into how the season of Lent developed, what is often cited as the Biblical basis for it, and the typical practices – such as giving up meat on Fridays – surrounding it. They then delve into it in a Biblical and confessional matter, pointing out some of the dangers of letting our “fasting be seen by others” (Matt. 6:16) and helpful distinctions that need to be made.
