Three Guys Theologizing (3GT)

This 3GT episode begins with a couple of the hosts trying to figure out the topic of the day. Are they discussing the view of the Millennial generation, or the different views of the millennium? Once they get that figured out, they are on their way!

For the guys delve into the different viewpoints of the last days. They begin by discussing why studying eschatology is important. They then define the millennium from Revelation 20. From there, they explain the basic differences between premillennial, amillennial, and postmillenial views. The approaches to interpreting the Book of Revelation – such as futuristic, symbolic, historicist, and preterist – are bandied about. The guys tip their hand on their own views and influential writers who have helped them. But then they quickly run out of time…just like the world will one day.

On occasion the guys like to revisit a topic from a previous episode or take reader’s questions about them. So they hit the rewind button and the record button (Can you even do that?), and the conversation begins.

But not before they discuss whether 3GT is even necessary or not, given this article about all the podcast jibber jabber out there. Barry then has to referee again, as Scott made some behind the scenes comments about Kyle that sent him into Eeyore mode. But eventually they get to the task at hand. One listener, who just may be a son-in-law to a host, wanted help with the dilemma of landscaping Catholic churches. Another wants the guys to rate two influential preachers as false teachers or not. Finally, they comment on Jephthah’s tragic vow and what happened to his daughter.

If there is a need in the church in this depressed, pessimistic, therapeutic age, it is that of true joy. So in this episode, the 3GTers go on a quest to find the source of Christian joy and its practice.

The guys differentiate joy from simply being happy. They show that joy is a mindset and heart attitude rather than simply an emotion, though it does involve the affections and influences the emotions. Foundational to Biblical joy is the God-granted gift of salvation in Christ with the presence of the Holy Spirit in one’s life. Looking at models and finding ways to cultivate joy in the Christian life are given. Hindrances to joy and ways to overcome them are offered. Emphasis is made on the necessity of Christ granting it, the resurrection, and the Holy Spirit.

Kyle wrote a post on vows (you can read it here), and that got the guys thinking. So they decided to discuss this topic on this episode of 3GT.

They first seek to define and distinguish a vow from other forms of promise, such as oaths, pledges, and resolutions. Common forms of vows, such as at marriages and baptisms, are examined and they discuss what actually constitutes a vow. Some of the blessing and dangers of vow taking are given. In the midst of all of this, one of the guys gets compared to a beauty queen. But they get back on track, and the episode ends with the guys sharing ways vows have helped them grow in Christ and practical guidelines for entering into a vow.
