  • NO LONGER DEAD: Saved to Serve | Judah Thomas

God has made you with a _________________.

[Acts 9:36 NIV] In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor.

A _________________ is someone who is determined to be like their _________________.

[Galatians 6:10] Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone--especially to those in the family of faith.

We need to ______________ less and ____________ more.

[Acts 9:37-39 NIV] About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. [38] Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!"** [39] Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.

God is honored when we live a life that _________________ others.

[Acts 9:40-42 NIV] Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. [41] He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. [42] This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.

[James 2:14-17] What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? [15] Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, [16] and you say, "Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well"--but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? [17] So you see, faith by itself isn't enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.

When your faith is _________________ you will always look to _________________ others.

  • James: Judging Others (October 11, 2015) | Judah Thomas

[James 2:1-9] My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? [2] For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. [3] If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, [4] doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives? [5] Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him? [6] But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? [7] Aren’t they the ones who slander Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear? [8] Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” [9] But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.

Judgement is ___________ to know why a person did what they did.

[Matthew 7:1-5] “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. [2] For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. [3] “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? [4] How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? [5] Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

Sometimes we judge God, but God's only motive is ______________.

  • NO LONGER DEAD: Delayed | Judah Thomas

[John 11:1-6 NIV] Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. [2] (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) [3] So the sisters sent word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." [4] When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." [5] Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. [6] So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days,

[John 11:6-15 NIV] So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, [7] and then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea." [8] "But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?" [9] Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world's light. [10] It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light." [11] After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." [12] His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." [13] Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. [14] So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, [15] and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."

God has the right to keep us in ______________.

[John 11:20-27 NIV] When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. [21] "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. [22] But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." [23] Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." [24] Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." [25] Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; [26] and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" [27] "Yes, Lord," she replied, "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."

God is ______________ in every situation.

God wants us to have faith without knowing the ______________.

[John 11:40-44 NIV] Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" [41] So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. [42] I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." [43] When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" [44] The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."

  • James: Endurance in Testing (October 4, 2015) | Judah Thomas (1st Anniversary)

James was written by James the _________________________

[James 1:1] This letter is from James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing to the “twelve tribes”—Jewish believers scattered abroad. Greetings!

    Stay _________________ in trouble

God is more interested in your ___________________ than your ______________________.

[1 Peter 1:6-7] So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

    Know what's ___________________ going on

[James 1:3-4] For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

[James 1:5-8] If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

If we need ________________ we should ask God for it.

[Mark 5:21-24] Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. [22] Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, [23] pleading fervently with him. "My little daughter is dying," he said. "Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live." [24] Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him.

The child isn't dead; she's only asleep." [40] The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. [41] Holding her hand, he said to her, ["Talitha koum,"] which means "Little girl, get up!" [42] And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.

  • NO LONGER DEAD: All Is Well | Judah Thomas

[2 Kings 4:8-10] One day Elisha went to the town of Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to come to her home for a meal. After that, whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for something to eat. [9] She said to her husband, "I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. [10] Let's build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by."

Selfless people look for opportunities to _______________ others.

[2 Kings 4:15-17] Call her back again," Elisha told him. When the woman returned, Elisha said to her as she stood in the doorway, [16] "Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!" "No, my lord!" she cried. "O man of God, don't deceive me and get my hopes up like that." [17] But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said.

But the man of God said, "Leave her alone, for she is in bitter distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me." [28] Then she said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, 'Do not deceive me?'" [29] He said to Gehazi, "Tie up your garment and take my staff in your hand and go. If you meet anyone, do not greet him, and if anyone greets you, do not reply. And lay my staff on the face of the child." [30] Then the mother of the child said, "As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So he arose and followed her.

[Acts 3:19] Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.

    REPENTANCE IS A CHANGED _____________

[2 Corinthians 7:9-10 NIV] Yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 ____________sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but ___________ sorrow brings death.

    ___________ is NOT repentance.

Repentance: deep sorrow, compunction, or contrition for a past sin, wrongdoing, or the like.

    Regret for past action

Metanoia: a change of mind and determination to lead a better course of life.

    REPENTANCE IS A CHANGED _____________

[John 20:1-4] Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. [2] She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, "They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" [3] Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. [4] They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

[John 20:11, 14-16] Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. [14] She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn't recognize him. [15] "Dear woman, why are you crying?" Jesus asked her. "Who are you looking for?" She thought he was the gardener. "Sir," she said, "if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him." [16] "Mary!" Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, "Rabboni!" (which is Hebrew for "Teacher").
