Thriving in The Word

While driving, someone passes by you going dangerously fast. A little while later you see that same car but they had an accident. "Well they had that coming with how fast they were going." Might have crossed your mind. Using some local news, Jesus illustrates that nobody is any better than anyone else. We are not the judge of whether or not someone deserves something, for every time someone gets their just deserts, a "Good person" who "Didn't deserve it" also is hurt or loses their life. Only God judges who is bearing fruit and who is to be tossed away.

You can't plan when the last time will be, but you can be ready for it. The last time you see a friend, the last time you see a sunset, we never know when. But we are given by the grace of God the ability now to prepare ourselves so when the Last Time comes, we are ready.

Sell all your belongings and give the money to the poor. Easy to say "Yeah we should do that." But who actually does? It leads into the topic we end up discussing this week, 'What lies in your heart?'.

Even if you did fight for your right to party, in the end all we are is dust in the wind. All the money in the world will not buy you another minute of life, another breath. Jesus is the only way to everlasting life. There are no u-hauls following hearses. In the end, all we are is dust in the wind.

Treat your neighbor as yourself. But who is your neighbor? Is it the members of your bible study? Is it your co-workers? Is it the guy who lives in the next apartment? Who is your neighbor? Jesus answers this question by way of a parable. Through it we see that it's not always who you expect playing the good guy. Sometimes it can be you.

To believe is not enough, you must remain tragically aware of your shortcomings, and work on improving them. Jesus didn't say go forth and make followers, He said "Go forth and make disciples". Don't just be a believer, be a disciple of Christ. Help others to do the same.

To truly be forgiven. We all want it. To feel the peace that comes when we feel the Lord presence and know it is well with our souls. But are we willing to offer that same forgiveness to others. To those who sin against us. This discussion doesn't even get to the Lord's (or Disciple's) Prayer and we are already hitting on it's points.

[Luke 11:4a] and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

Who truly knows a person's heart? What motivates you to do good? Is it because you love your fellow man or are you trying to balance the cosmic scales? When Jesus was crucified, there was a man on the cross next to him, who repented to Jesus and was told "Today you will join me in paradise". We play what if, and go into this moral quandary looking not only at actions but motives. You can't tie the game if you don't know the score.
