Today i’d like to piggyback off of a previous podcast I’ve done regarding brokerage link accounts. The reason behind this podcast is that I'd like to share with higher ed employees how to invest in certain sectors of the market within their retirement plan. All higher ed employees have the "core" retirement plan where they'll have maybe 10 - 30 investment choices in their Voluntary Retirement Plan. Of which, none (maybe one) are sector funds. How do I get into certain sectors like tech, bio health care, utilities, etc...? Today you'll learn exactly how to do that. Once again, this is information you're not going to receive by attending a HR seminar or talking to your retirement plan vendor rep.

This could be the most important episode I've done for KBOR employees. Albeit a little convoluted, but very important and advantageous nonetheless. Did you know that distributions from your KBOR retirement plan are state tax free? Maybe you did....but I bet you haven't heard of the strategy that my firm's implemented to maximize investment choices outside KBOR's retirement plan and still take advantage of the state tax exemption at retirement. It's such a little used strategy that I've never seen anyone use it outside my firm since I've been helping KBOR employees, and that goes back to 2001. This episode will teach you the logistics of implementing this strategy. Remember, I'm here to teach and inform you on various topics regarding the KBOR retirement plan that you just won't get anywhere else. In this podcast, you’ll learn about the most underutilized feature in your university retirement plan and, in my opinion, the most beneficial. You’ll learn which retirement plan vendors offer these features (not all of them do). Every higher ed employee should be implementing this strategy in their retirement plan if their plan allows it. Bonus, if you happen to have a 401(a), I’ll share with you another mostly unknown fact regarding those types of accounts and how to crush your expenses down.

Heard of a Roth IRA? I bet you have, but you never really paid attention to it because you were investing inside your university retirement plan. Did you know that you can invest into a Roth 403(b), which is just like a Roth IRA, but even better! How much better? Listen to this short podcast to hear how you can take advantage of this awesome retirement plan feature that most KBOR employees aren't utilizing or even know about.

In today’s episode, I’m thrilled to share with you some news that one of the largest university retirement plan vendors has lowered their expenses on many of their mutual fund choices. I’ll discuss which vendor it is and how you can access these investments. I’ll share with you how I came about finding this information out – hint, it was on accident during a client meeting. If I asked you, “What are your current retirement plan costs?” Would you be able to give me a correct answer? After you’ve listened to this podcast, you’ll be armed with the information to lower your expenses = more money in your accounts. This is information you just won’t find anywhere else.

In today’s episode, I’ll discuss if it makes sense to higher an independent financial advisor to help you out with your university retirement plan. This podcast actually stems from a recent lunch I had with a client of mine and his colleague that tagged along with us. I’ll get into the discussion I had with this professor and how he ended up becoming a client of mine – still a client today. I’ll get into the pros and cons of hiring a financial advisor and why it may not be a good idea for you to go at this alone. It’s such a big part of your financial future – you definitely want to get it right. I’ll discuss how a lot of employees will look to their vendor reps (ie…Fidelity or TIAA) for help with various questions regarding their retirement plan. I’ll discuss why that’s not a good idea since they do not act in a fiduciary role and they’re not experts when it comes to all the nuances in your retirement plan and the details of the investments in the plan. You’ll come away from this episode with a good understanding on if hiring an independent financial advisor is a good idea for you and, if so, how you go about doing that.

The word "Fiduciary" is a funny and often times misused word in my industry. In today's Podcast, Greg Shepard will inform you as to why TIAA / ING / Fidelity just can't act as a true fiduciary. Learn how an ex-client of mine made a mistake in believing she was making the right decision in going with TIAA directly. In this episode you'll learn how to determine if your financial advisor is a true fiduciary and how to hold him / her to their word.
