  • Mike McCullough - Quantized Inertia & The Horizon Drive
Dr. Mike McCullough discusses a new cosmological model for Quantized Inertia and the "Horizon Drive" for advanced propulsion.
Dr. McCullough's model predicts galaxy rotation without dark matter through the mechanism of Quantized Inertia, which proposes that the phenomenon called inertia is caused by relativistic horizons making the quantum vacuum non-uniform in space and this offers a new way to engineer thrust for any type of vehicle or spacecraft (horizon engineering).
The prediction is that we can use electrical conductors or nano-engineered materials to make ‘synthetic horizons’, damping the quantum vacuum, in a similar way to the Casimir effect, and engineer thrust without propellant.
In his presentation, Mike will discuss the theory of Quantized Inertia, then present evidence from galaxy rotation, and finally discuss his attempts to bring the theory out in the lab as thrust, which led to his design for a propulsion device called the Horizon Drive.
Dr. McCullough has a Bachelors in physics from University of York, a PhD in Physical Oceanography from the University of Liverpool, and currently lectures in Geomatics at the University of Plymouth. He's a member of the British Interplanetary Society, the Lifeboat Foundation, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and has published dozens of papers on physics and geophysics in numerous journals.

  • Ronald Lee - Overpopulation & Demographic Transition
Global population is 8 billion and it's straining the Earth's carrying capacity. Dr. Ronald Lee discusses the surprising solution to overpopulation and the social impact of demographic transition.
Back in 1968, Stanford Professor Paul Erlich prefaced his non-fiction best-seller, The Population Bomb, by saying, “The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. At this late date nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate…”
Erlich's Malthusian catastrophe never happened: and if demographers are correct, it never will. According to a 2008 IIASA report, if the world stabilizes at a total fertility rate of 1.5 — where Europe is today — then by 2200 the global population will fall to half of what it is today. By 2300, it’ll barely scratch 1 billion. Today we explore why - and what it means.
Dr. Ronald Lee is a Professor of the Graduate School in Demography and Economics at the University of California at Berkeley. He has an MA in Demography from Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard, and is the founding Director of the Center for the Economics and Demography of Aging at Berkeley.
Throughout his career, he has taught economic demography, and has earned numerous honors and awards for his contributions to this field of study. His current research focuses on the macroeconomic consequences of changing population age distributions and on intergenerational transfers and population aging. He joins us today to discuss the topics of overpopulation and demographic transition.
For 18 years he co-directed with Andrew Mason the National Transfer Accounts project, which includes collaborating research teams in more than 60 countries, and estimates intergenerational flows of resources through the public and private sectors (NTAccounts.org). He continues to work on modeling and forecasting demographic variables including mortality and on evolutionary biodemography, in particular the role of intergenerational transfers in life history theory. From 2010-2015 he co-chaired a National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Long-run Macroeconomic Effects of the Aging U.S. Population.
He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy; he is a former President of the Population Association of America and a Laureate of the international population association, the IUSSP. He holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Lund and Montreal."

  • Avi Loeb - UAP, Von Neumann Probes & The Monolith
Are UAP self-replicating extraterrestrial probes exploring the galaxy? Dr. Avi Loeb discusses the UAP Phenomena, Von Neumann Probes, Freeman Dyson's "Astrochicken", and Arthur C. Clarke's "The Monolith".
In Avi Loeb's article, “What Came First: the Astro-Chicken or the Egg?”, he speculated on the possibility of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) being self-replicating interstellar Von Neumann probes, and compared Freeman Dyson's biological "Astrochicken" with machine-based "AI Astronauts" similar to "The Monolith" in Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey".
The vast scale of the galaxy makes encountering a Von Neumann Probe a likely scenario for first contact: ET could send a probe to each of the 400 billion stars in the Milky Way in less than 50 “generations” or replication events, and the biologically-inspired self-replication of these probes ensures their "descendants" could remain active for millions, perhaps billions of years.
We also discuss the possibility that extraterrestrial probes have been observing life on Earth for millenia, as discussed in Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey", and the possibility of finding artifacts on the moon as described in James P. Hogan's "Inherit the Stars", and the possiblity of Oumuamua being similar to the artifact in Arthur C. Clarke's "Rendezvous With Rama".
Dr. Loeb concludes by discussing the goals & progress of the Galileo Project, and the funding levels required to adequately conduct the mission of searching the skies and the stars for evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.
Dr. Avi Loeb, the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University. Avi is a theoretical physicist who works on astrophysics and cosmology, formerly the longest serving chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy, the founding director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
Among his many achievements, Avi is a best-selling author, has published over 700 papers and essays, made major contributions to scientific topics including black holes and gravitational microlensing, and received recognition and awards from dozens of prestigious scientific organizations and academic institutions.
