  • John Storrs Hall - Nanotech Nuclear Power
We’re joined by John Storrs Hall a subject matter expert and key influencer in the field of molecular nanotechnology. He joins us to discuss a variety of visionary concepts for Nanotech nuclear technology in his latest book, “Where Is My Flying Car”, available on Amazon
John's achievements include former roles as a computer systems architect at Rutgers University, the founder of the sci.nanotech Usenet newsgroup, founding chief scientist of Nanorex Inc., and former president of the Foresight Institute.
Our focus areas start with fission energy: there are something like 4 billion tons of uranium dissolved in the Earth’s oceans, which works out to over 100 quadrillion watt-years of energy. That’s enough to supply the current American 10 kw level of power to 10 billion people for 10,000 years.
There’s even more uranium in ocean rocks, so you’ve also talked about these levels of dissolved uranium being a homeostatic equilibrium, which means that if we extract it, those levels will bounce back to current levels over time. We're going to be exploring these concepts and how Nanotech can help facilitate them.
The next challenge is the reactor. John is designs based on Freeman Dyson’s TRIGA reactor, which has a negative-coefficient of reactivity. The hotter the reactor gets, the less it supports the fission reaction. About 70 TRIGA’s have operated for over 60 years without a significant accident.
We'll also be exploring the concepts of cold fusion, LENR, and lattice-confinement fusion, and how Peter Hagelstein's "Quantum Coherence" may enable this reaction to occur, and the Navy SPAWAR and NASA experiments that suggest CF effects are worth further investigation - and how nanotechnology may facilitate & enable future cold fusion energy.
We'll conclude by touching on hot fusion - the "big iron" of the industry, and possible roles that nanotech may play in that area as well.

  • Sai Teja Peddineni - Veera Tardigrade Clothing Insulation
We’re joined by Sai Teja Peddineni, the CEO at Veera Advanced Research. Peddineni is India’s first and only volcano climber, which inspired him to begin developing a next-generation clothing insulation to withstand the extreme temperatures that he encounters.
He began doing materials R&D with physicist in 2018, which led to multiple breakthroughs as they developed the final product – the “Veera Tardigrade clothing insulation system”, a remarkable type of temperature-proof protective clothing that also masks the wearer’s heat signature.
The Veera Tardigrade clothing insulation system is a new, lightweight material that incorporates carbon-nanotubes and other propertary materials into a fabric ranging from 0.5mm to 3mm in thickness, and it protects the wearer from a range of temperatures from -200° degrees to 1000° Centigrade. In this interview, we'll be demonstrating 3 different video clips that showcase the remarkable properties of this new material.
First, you'll see Peddineni literally pour molten copper onto his arm, while remaining completely protected by this insulation. Next, we'll show him being doused with a stream of liquid nitrogen over his head and shoulders, again remaining fully protected. Finally, you'll see a demonstration of Peddineni cloaking himself from an Infrared (IR) camera as he pulls an insulating garment over his body.

  • Holger Thorsten Schubart - Neutrino Energy Group
We're joined by Holger Thorsten Schubart, a German tech entrepreneur with the dream of converting graphene lattice vibrations into electrical energy.
Holger is the CEO of the Neutrino Energy Group, which has been working to develop a multi-layer power conversion technology they've dubbed the neutrinovoltaic cell, which they claim is powered by ambient environmental energy that creates graphene lattice vibrations which can be harnessed for power generation.
Unlike it's namesake, the "photovoltaic" cell, which captures EM energy on a 2-dimensional surface, Holger describes the neutrinovoltaic as being constructed in 3-dimensions using a massively multi-parallel arrangement of thin-film stacked sheets of graphene - each of which captures a tiny amount of energy that contributes to the net device output.
Holger claims an output of 3.6 watts per cubic centimeter from today's neutrinovoltaic prototypes, with even higher potential output possible with future refinements over time.
Are neutrinovoltaic cells powered by solar neutrinos? Not exactly: neutrinos are electrical neutral subatomic particles that rarely interact with normal matter - but they're incredibly plentiful. At the surface of the Earth, the flux is about 65 billion solar neutrinos per second per square centimeter, making them a powerful metaphor for the idea of a universe filled with energy abundance.
Holger has stated that he believes passing neutrinos do create lattice vibrations in graphene that contribute to the total energy produced by the cells, but downplays their importance, noting that they are one of many energy sources that cause lattice vibrations, which is ultimately what neutrinovoltaic cells are converting into electrical energy.
Regardless of contributing energy sources, graphene lattices have been shown to produce energy capable of being rectified into direct electrical current, as demonstrated by Paul Thibado's "Graphene Energy Harvester" experiment at the U. of Arkansas. This experiment was unrelated to Holger's organization, but considered relevant and supports energy conversion concept.

  • Thomas Cooley - Hyperspectral Imaging
We’re joined by Dr. Thomas Cooley, Chief Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate, and we're discussing the scientific & commercial applications of hyperspectral imaging.
Tom has a PhD in Optical Sciences, and MS in Applied Physics, and a NS in Electrical Engineering – and a 25-year career with AFRL. He wrote the book on this topic, entitled "Hyperspectral Imaging & Remote Sensing", available on Amazon.
His roles have included Program management, the Space ISR Mission Lead, Senior Scientist for Situational Awareness – and for the last 5 years, Chief Scientist in the Space Vehicles Directorate, where he assists with the planning and execution of an annual $165M Air Force science and technology program and serves as the OSD Space Community of Interest lead for all space-related science and technology issues across the DoD.
He joins us to discuss advances in hyperspectral imaging and how those are empowering ISR advances within the DoD, and offering new capabilities to science and industry as well.
Hyperspectral imaging is also referred to as "imaging spectroscopy", which involves capturing continuous and contiguous ranges of wavelengths of light instead of discrete chunks of the spectrum as typically captured in multispectral imaging.
The images produced by hyperspectral imaging are somewhat different than a traditional photograph, and traditionally represented in a three-dimensional (3D) data cube composed of stacked images of the same scene seen at adjacent wavelengths. This dimensions of this data cube are built up from the satellite cross-track, along-track, and wavelength range data.
In addition to the public sector, Hyperspectral imaging is finding early commercial applications as well. The Carnegie Airborne Observatory is using them to map the chemical properties of forests, ImpactVision is using them to estimate the shelf-life of food, and Rebellion Photonics is using them as part of a safety system on oil rigs.
The cost & size of this technology is one factor driving commercial availability. For example, BaySpec sells HSI imaging systems that fit on drones for around $5,000. While small commercial systems lack the full spectral field available in traditional hyperspectral imaging systems, they do fill a number of market applications and may drive future demand for HSI systems.
