Brian is a paramedic who has worked 911 EMS, flight, and critical care transport, including patients who are at end of life and donating organs, and even the organs themselves. After hearing the experience that Anthony and Jessica DeCilio went through with their daughter's end of life care he graciously offered to shed light on how the process of organ donation and procurement usually works. 

We talk about how someone becomes an organ donor, how the DMV process is far from providing the "informed" part of informed consent, how brain death is determined clinically, how organ procurement occurs across the United States and most of the western world, the importance of talking with your loved ones about your wishes for end of life care early on, and where to find the information to help you make the best decisions for you when the inevitable occurs.

To celebrate my 100th episode I go back to where it all started with my first podcast cohost and good friend, Michael Marasco. Mike's known me since I was a brand new baby EMT and it was great catching up with him. We talk about how responding to accidents has impacted his mindset as a new father, how the world seems to be spiraling into an abyss of absurdity, and what that spicy pepper emoji means next to a link on someone's social media bio.

After a choking incident caused cardiac arrest Jessica and Anthony's daughter, Caitlyn, was in the ICU on life support. Making a tragic situation all the more difficult were representatives from an organ donation company pressuring these heart broken parents to allow the hospital to induce cardiac death so that their daughter's organs could be harvested, because Caitlyn had elected to be an organ donor when obtaining her driver's license as a teenager. 

Jessica and Anthony share their troubling story in an effort to bring transparency to a situation that nobody who checks that box as a teenager could ever imagine happening, and how they're working with state legislators to make sure that when future donors give consent that they're actually informed about what they're consenting to, and what the process actually entails for those we love after we pass.

That career door has closed anyway and it's for the best because now I get to do what I love to do again: communicating ideas, gaining information, and sharing stories.
