Taoiseach Micheál Martin said shoes are an essential item in terms of the growth and development of children.

He said Government is finalising guidance that would be outlined in regulations.

This would allow shoe shops with fitting services to measure children's feet.

However, Mr Martin said this could only be done by appointment only.

The appointments could be made by phone or online.

He said the shops could then provide the fitting service and the sale of children's shoes only.

Underage training and sport for children will return later this month with the Government announcing that April 26th is the date for a return.

But is it soon enough and how much damage has been done by cancelling sports.

Parents are calling on the government for clarity on buying ‘essential’ children’s shoes in stores – especially in the case of children who require foot splints.

The Journal has spoken to parents of children who require special orthotics to help their mobility development say they have been forced to buy multiple pairs of shoes online in order to find one that fits.

Parents whose children do not require orthotics have also said that they are unable to find proper-fitting shoes and need access to measurement services in shoe shops.
